Pakistan finally lifted the ban on Facebook today after the site apologized for Draw Muhammad Day. The whole bruhaha began two weeks ago when said day prompted Pakistani courts to order the site blocked. Depicting Muhammad is, of course, blasphemous. Just a week ago, Facebook stated that the contents of the ‘Everybody Draw Muhammad Day!’ fan page weren’t violating Facebook’s terms and therefore were legit. FaceBook Still Remains Banned in Pakistan, YouTube Back Up

Internet censorship still remains strong in Pakistan even after access to the popular video website YouTube is restored.  FaceBook along with 1,200 web pages still remain blocked after being deemed “blasphemous.” A contest on FaceBook calling for people to draw the prophet Mohammed in an attempt to promote freedom of expression sparked a major backlash in the largely Muslim country. Pakistan Blocks Facebook Over Everybody Draw Mohammed Day

The “Everybody Draw Mohammed” Day Facebook event was formed in protest to the threats against South Park creators, Trey Parker and Matt Stone, over their recent South Park episode that featured the likeness of Mohammed. The event, due to take place on May 20th, prompted the country of Pakistan to ban access to Facebook until May 31st. The move was in response to further outrage in Pakistan over the purpose of the group, which is encouraging everyone to violate an important Muslim law which bans likenesses of Mohammed from being created.
