Homemade GoPro array mixes action sports with Matrix camera work

Homemade GoPro array mixes action sports with Matrix camera work

What happens when you combine 15 GoPro cameras, some talented extreme athletes, and a ton of ingenuity? You get The Matrix, only without guns or metallic insects bent on destroying humanity. The fact that the effects aren’t as fluid or smooth as the Hollywood version of the multi-angle cinematography technique commonly referred to as “bullet time” doesn’t take away from the amazing scenes. If anything, it gives it a modern discontinuity that adds even more depth to the mind blowing effects. It starts simply. “Hi, I’m Mark, and this is my GoPro array.” From there, the eyes are treated to some extreme…

This image seems to be low quality until you learn that it was taken by moonlight

The biggest problem with night-vision photography and video is that you really only have two choices – a super-sensitive DSLR that makes the images too noisy, or cameras that pull from a different light spectrum making the images the wrong colors. Now, Canon is developing a CMOS sensor feature that makes night look like day. This can come in handy for taking pictures of the stars without using long exposures or videos of the same. It can see the full sky, even capturing shooting stars. By using Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor sensors, they are able to turn light into electrical signals…

Photography is a dangerous hobby [Infographic]

Photography is a dangerous hobby [Infographic]

For many photographers, the thrill is in the chase rather than the catch. These adrenaline junkie snappers live for the excitement that courses through their veins as they chase down storms, march into war zones and get up close and personal with sharks. While these mad men may laugh in the face of danger, damage to their equipment and poor quality photos would soon wipe the smile off their face. …

iPhone photography and the world around

iPhone photography and the world around

The Apple iPhone 4s is just not another pretty face with sleek design and glorious interface. The iPhone is designed with what could be the best camera to be installed in a phone on the market! This 8 megapixel camera phone comes with a tremendous amount of features to make every picture that much better. Whether you are a shutter bug, or just someone who wants a camera for life on the go, the iPhone 4s has stepped it up from prior models with a higher dynamic of color range, larger f/2.4 aperture, inferred filter, multiple focal points, intergraded editing software and all powered by Apple’s mighty…

Photography past meets present - best iPhone accessory ever?

Photography past meets present - best iPhone accessory ever?

It doesn’t get more awesome than this. It does not get more awesome than this. I don’t think anyone can argue that the iPhone already takes pretty swell pictures, as far as phones are concerned – but this is something new entirely. Black Design Associates have dreamed up this inarguably awesome iPhone/Leica i9 combo that simply begs to be produced for real-real. Can you just imagine this? Says BDA of the design: “It’s common practice to combine a smart phone with a digital camera, but how do you combine a great smart phone with a great digital camera when your brands may speak to very different…

The world

The world's largest stadium photograph, with 90,000 potential Facebook tags

If you were in London recently and watched the 2011 FA Cup Final (it’s a football soccer thing) at Wembley, you would have been part of history — the world’s largest 360-degree panoramic photo was shot there. The photo is huge, and with an insane amount of detail, but there is also a bit of fun going on here with social media as well. The Wembley 360 is a 10-gigapixel photograph that was prepped and shot with a 24-hour deadline. The photographer, Jeffrey Martin, had some obstacles to get through to shoot the photo — lighting, positioning, stitching, and, oh yeah, capturing 90,000 moving fans —…

The Most Multitaskingest Thing In Photography Today

The Most Multitaskingest Thing In Photography Today

For so many years, mankind has faced a huge conundrum: how does one take photos above the water and below it at the same time? Thankfully, we could now have an answer. And the most awesome part is that it is called the UNDERABOVE. Wait, I lied. That isn’t the most awesome part. The awesome part is that it accomplishes two things: it looks like something man created to destroy humanity, and it takes photos of below and above the water synchronously with dual-lens technology. It’s obvious why they would do the former, but not quite so sure why they would want to do the latter. I’m guessing Hollywood has run…

Urbanography: The First Photo of Man?

Urbanography: The First Photo of Man?

Is it a bird? A plane? Big Foot? It’s none of those. However, it might just be the first photo of humans in existence. It all started after photos of Cincinnati along the Ohio River were discovered and analyzed. The photos themselves were intriguing, but now question has arisen over whether or not this one photo is a first of its kind: the first photo of humans in existence. Is it? Robert Krulwich, an NPR correspondant, was on to something: This is Cincinnati on Sunday, September 24th, 1848—162 years ago. The picture, a daguerreotype taken by Charles Fontayne and William Porter (who were standing…

Wanna See Flickr

Wanna See Flickr's 5 Billionth Photo?

It’s always cool when a totally big-ass milestone is hit on something, sort of like Twitter’s 20 billionth tweet, which… well, I… posted about it awhile ago, but for the life of me, can’t find. Whatever. It was a boring tweet anyway. It’s just cool to nose in on the big milestones, whatever they may be. And that’s exactly what this is: Flickr’s 5 billionth photo, uploaded by user Aaron Yeo – a view of the Woodward’s building in Vancouver, Canada. According to Media Culpa, a blog that has enough time on its hands to track these stats, Flickr adds about a billion photos per year. So, with that in mind,…

Because Your Camera Phone Really Does Suck

Because Your Camera Phone Really Does Suck

Let’s face it – your phone’s camera sucks. I don’t care if you’ve got a fancy-assed iBerry Droidstorm Triple X Premium. Its camera sucks. Phone cameras just suck. That said, we need our phone’s camera. Y’know, for taking pictures of stuff (I sure can’t afford a Nikon). But that doesn’t make them suck any less. What are we to do? Do the opposite of fret, of course. The photophiles over at Photojojo have decided to entreat the lesser photographer to a set of lenses that help your camera phone become the faux DSLR you never wanted to pay for. And you’ll never have to, because these little guys are not only…

iStockphoto Goes Mobile Putting Stock Photography in Your Pocket

iStockphoto Goes Mobile Putting Stock Photography in Your Pocket

Hey, y’know iStockPhoto? Well, hold onto your MOTHERLOVING hat, because this business just came to your iPhone. Just now. Yes, it did. I swear. Right now. “Inspiration and ideas often strike when we least expect,” claims iStockphoto’s COO, Kelly Thompson. It’s totally cool that I can save images for later and share them with my colleagues and stuff – the usefulness for quick collaboration is apparent. I have to point out that this app is pretty useful if you’re a contributing artist. iStockphoto Al fresco lets you track your downloads and sales, which rules if you’re the kind of person who likes…

Google Logo Goes Lo-Rez

Google Logo Goes Lo-Rez

Google’s logo has been just about everything at this point. It’s been outer space, it’s been Leo Da Vinci’s drawings, it’s been the Russian ballet, and it’s been every pop culture reference you can name. Now, employees at Google London have recreated the internet’s most-seen logo using the late 90s’ most cliche image technique: the photo mosaic. I’m actually quite intrigued by this little video; with no obvious projection method used, did they just number all 884 photographs, or something? Even then, that’s incredibly impressive, and makes me want to try doing up a giant self-portrait or something…
