Bet You Wish You'd Paid More Attention In Shop Class Now

Jonathan Clifford Bergqvist’s dad could probably beat up your dad. When Jonathan decided to build a shoulder-mounted support for his camera, he got his dad on board. In terms of craftsmanship, he could give the guys from This Old House a run for their money. Starting from a tree branch, this guy gets medieval on a piece of wood, shaping it and working it until it’s smooth and round. The end result is a superb example of why sometimes modern materials just aren’t as cool as the old school. The rig even included a focus adjuster so the operator doesn’t have to take one hand off the grip. Jonathan and his dad…

Put your photos in the ring and watch them fight.

Put your photos in the ring and watch them fight.

Finally, a way for photographers to get their hands dirty and feel tough. Photobattle.me is a way to submit your photographs, sit back, and cheer from behind your monitor as the public chooses the best photo. This application, developed by Kyle Fox, will allow you to submit nine photos of your choice and will randomly put them up against another photo. If you are one of those indecisive people, and can’t choose which photo you like better or don’t want to hurt anyone’s feelings, there is a “SKIP BATTLE” button you can press and move onto the next battle. I guess it would be comparable to the “NEXT” button…

A view of Sussex, England through a tilt-shift lens. Real or fake?

A view of Sussex, England through a tilt-shift lens. Real or fake?

Tilt shift photography seems to be the next upcoming trend with photographers. What is tilt shift photography? “Tilt-shift photography” refers to the use of camera movements on small- and medium-format cameras, and sometimes specifically refers to the use of tilt for selective focus, often for simulating a miniature scene. Sometimes the term is used when the shallow depth of field is simulated with digital postprocessing; the name may derive from the tilt-shift lens normally required when the effect is produced optically. “Tilt-shift” actually encompasses two different types of movements:…

Apple makes camera connection kit for iPad available for pre-order

People looking to pick up their iPads in a couple days just got some good news. Apple has made its camera connection kit available for pre-order. Coming in at a staggering $29, the connection kit consists of two plastic devices which insert into your iPad’s dock port. One device has a SD card reader on the end and the other has a USB capture device for people wanting to plug their cameras in directly. The connection kit supports all standard photo formats including RAW. I’ve been looking forward to this day for a while so I won’t have to carry my laptop around with me to small client shoots. Next week, I’ll…

Impossible Project releases a new Polaroid camera. Yes, thats right, a new Polaroid.

Polaroid? They still exist? Everyone once and a while we rummage through our grandparents closet and stumble upon this old metal box that when the shutter is pressed, prints out a photo. We shake the photo, at rapid speeds hoping that it will dry quickly and we can look at the instant quality of a polaroid picture. Gone are those days and we now have digital cameras……. umm.. and then…. Impossible Project releases a new, polaroid camera with a new age design. Really? and its got a digital feature? The new Polaroid 600 One is designed by Paul Giambarba, who is also responsible for designing the…

Say Cheese and SMILE! Camera that puts a smile on your face.... literally

Say Cheese and SMILE! Camera that puts a smile on your face.... literally

As a photographer, I understand how difficult it is sometimes to make people not only smile, but have a naturally looking smile. Stefan Stubble and Adnreas Schmelas of the University of the Arts in Berlin, have came up with a camera that no matter what, will take your photo with an artificial smile. The camera uses an array of smiling photos that were taken before to basically replace photoshop and instantly give you that artificial but award winning smile. :) Not sure if I would actually pick up this product because as a photographer sometimes you want to convey emotion in your photo with somebody…

Get Epic With Fallout 3: The LARP Pictorial

The images here have gotten some real currency on the net by this point, but they are too good to pass up. These Russian guys do LARP better than I do LIFE. Look me in the face and tell me you wouldn’t be freaking out with joy if you were sitting around this fire pictured above, dressed appropriately and pretending to understand what is going on. …
