Monkeys demand equal pay for their labors

Monkeys demand equal pay for their labors

Monkeys seem to have the ability to share the sentiment of the #OccupyWallStreet when it comes to equal pay. Grapes and cucumbers are not equal and these monkeys seem to know it. It’s part of an experiment type that has been duplicated numerous times. Animals that are rewarded for performing a task are okay when they each receive the same compensation for performing the same work regardless of how good or bad the reward is, but once one animal seems to be getting more reward than the other, they take offense to it. In the case of the angry monkey in the TED video below, one monkey takes great offense. …

A "smart" science lesson

A "smart" science lesson

Intelligence, from a scientific perspective, is a broad, and deep comprehension—”catching on,” “making sense,” of things, or “figuring out” what to do. The average IQ falls between a range of 90 and 110. An important disclaimer, however, is that intelligence tests do not measure creativity, character, personality, or other important differences among individuals, nor are they intended to. The notion that our intelligence is influenced by our genes has shifted from “taboo” to common acceptance. There are three genes associated with academic achievement: Dat 1, Dat…

In case you ever wondered about traveling through a hollow earth...

In case you ever wondered about traveling through a hollow earth...

Normally, VSauce puts out some amazing minutephysics videos that spark the imagination and enlighten us in ways the world and universe work. Other times, the information is relatively useless but interesting nonetheless. This video falls into the latter category. What would happen if you drilled from one side of the earth through the center to the other? That’s what they try to explain here. …

Touching "Magic Arms" video shows some of the potential of 3D printers

Touching "Magic Arms" video shows some of the potential of 3D printers

We’ve seen some of the amazing things that 3D printers can do, but most of them are more for folly and enjoyment rather than practical use. The future of 3D printers is bright, but today they’re good for launching Stephen Colbert’s head into space and not a lot more. Or are they? There have been other examples of how 3D printing technology can be used for practical purposes, but the video below is the most touching and truly amazing use that we’ve seen so far. In it, young Emma was born with arthrogryposis, a disability that would have made it impossible for her to move her arms. Thanks to a combination…

If everyone jumped at once, not much would happen

If everyone jumped at once, not much would happen

Have you ever wondered what would happen if everyone on earth jumped at the exact same time? Would it make a difference if they were all brought to the same place? As it turns out, nothing would really be affected. Sure, there would be a certain force exerted on the earth that it’s definitely not used to, but it would be nothing compared to a major earthquake. As this video by Vsauce explains, there are other ways to make an impact. …

Air Force

Air Force's mach 5 missile fails for third time

If the three-strikes-rule were in effect, the Air Force would be out of luck for testing its X-51A Waverider cruise missile as the supersonic rocket failed again to activate its scramjet propulsion system. The project has cost $300 million so far and there may not be enough budget (or will power) left for a fourth test. As part of the US Air Force’s “prompt global strike” initiative, the missile was supposed to give the military the ability to strike targets anywhere in the world in a matter of minutes. As a cruise missile, it would not be perceived as a nuclear threat and accidentally prompt a nuclear…

Science says naps are truly effective

Science says naps are truly effective

There are energy drinks and caffeinated beverages galore available at most offices. There’s a good ol’ splash of water in the face that often does the trick. We’re even offered candy bars or other sweets to give us sugar “energy”. The real solution to midday grogginess may be the power nap and offices in Japan are allowing their employees to go to “Sleep Salons” to get their nap on. In this video by ASAP Science, they give a brief description of why naps of less than 30 minutes may be enough to get the most productivity out of people throughout the day. …

Visualizing pi (4 million decimal points worth of it, at least)

Visualizing pi (4 million decimal points worth of it, at least)

Pi is an irrational number and the project conducted by TWO-N might seem like an irrational project, but it yielded a mind-blowing visualization. “We are representing 4 million digits at a glance,” TWO-N designer Hermann Zschiegner said to Mashable. “It would take an average person roughly three weeks to read out the numbers, but it only takes a second to look at our graphic.” According to the team, “On October 17, 2011, Shigeru Kondo concluded 371 days of computer 10,000,000,000,000 decimal places of pi. Roughly 44 TB of disk was needed to perform the computation, and 7.6 TB of disk was…

Population poses problems technology can

Population poses problems technology can't fix

Many of the problems that face the world currently have been solved through technology. Food can be grown, raised, processed, packaged, and shipped in efficient ways. Medicine has extended life and cured most diseases that once killed the masses. We can communicate with people anywhere in the world, travel to nearly any place in the world, and we have the ability to protect the people from most forms of natural challenges. The only problem we can’t really address is the sheer bulk. There’s simply too many people with too many needs to handle all of the problems. The technology is there. We just can’t…

Catlin Seaview Survey will be like Google Street View underwater

Catlin Seaview Survey will be like Google Street View underwater

Climate change has been a hot topic on land and in the air for some time now. We have data that tells us what’s happening. We have images of polar bears stuck on drifting ice that melted to a nub. We can feel the heat (and cold), smell the quality of the air, and see the statistics that show us something is going awry in nature. We have only been able to skim the surface for the most part when it comes to the seas. The Catlin Seaview Survey seeks to change that. With the help of Google, the organizations wants to establish a 360 degree panoramic vision of the full 2400km stretch of the Great Barrier Reff and Coral…

A brief glance at the solar system

A brief glance at the solar system

One of our missions is to help to educate the world about technology and science falls into the category as something that we want the world to know. It’s not our core but it’s a part of what drives that core. The video below is relatively old but utterly amazing in the way it simplifies local space. Worthy of a 10-minute watch. …

iGEM makes science cool for students

iGEM makes science cool for students

For nearly a decade, the International Genetically Engineered Machine competition has put the sharpest minds in high school and undergraduate institutions around the world into competitive and creative mode to find the next great mad scientist genius inventor. Students work during the summer in their own schools or (gulp) labs using biological parts to build systems that can operate on living cells. Starting with 5 teams in 2004 and expanding to 160 team with over 2000 participants in 30 countries in 2011, the competition has yielded inventions that have included an arsenic biodetector,…
