Twitter and Skype Go Down Together: Conspiracy Theories Ensue

Twitter and Skype Go Down Together: Conspiracy Theories Ensue

It appears that Skype crushed itself under its own weight today with reports of up to 20 million users unable to sign in to the VoIP/Text/Video/Audio chat service. They have been the world up to date with a series of Tweets, but that didn’t last long as Twitter went down. Coincidence? Yes. But that doesn’t mean we can’t stir up the tech conspiracy theorists out there. Twitter just received $200 million in funding. Skype is working towards a $100 million IPO. Facebook is trying to buy Yahoo! to… Okay, so we made the last one up. Skype’s most recent Tweet indicates that things are on their way back to…

Javascript Object Fuels Rumor of Video With Skype on Facebook

Javascript Object Fuels Rumor of Video With Skype on Facebook

While Tal Ater was working on his Green Any Site Facebook application, he stumbled across a javascript object called Video Chat. This object had properties that were referential to Skype’s video chat features, pointing to potential video integration between the two sites in the future. While the application wasn’t there every time Tal loaded the page, he thinks that Facebook could be “bucket testing” the feature. The object also tests for plugin functionality using the Skype SDK, which further points to a collaboration between the two popular online services. Tal has helpfully provided…

...And They Never Made Real Phone Calls Again.

...And They Never Made Real Phone Calls Again.

And the peasants rejoiced; For iOS4 was released, and so did it support multiple tasks; And Steven smiled, for it was good. And for a time, it was good. And then, so too did come Skype v2.0.1, and so it did support the multiple tasks; And it did threaten with a totally scary voice, “[Skype 2.0.1] supports multitasking. This means you can receive Skype calls while other apps are running, even when your iPhone is locked.” And the peasants rejoiced; for this could essentially all but replace their regular phone service, on top of making cheap international calls. And thus did this ring true; For Skype…

A Bluetooth Timepiece to Absolutely Baffle the Crap Out of You

A Bluetooth Timepiece to Absolutely Baffle the Crap Out of You

Hey, wanna look like a time traveller? That’s a stupid question, yes you do. This here thing what you’re looking at is not an ancient Atlantean technomantic power talisman, but a goddamn watch. A watch! Okay, yeah, it does other things too – things like act as a Bluetooth headset for your phone, a remote for Skype, a controller for your MP3 player. Y’know, stuff you’d expect it to do. But I’m honestly more impressed that the folks at Tokyoflash have found a way to cram a timepiece into this thing as well. And, in true Tokyoflash fashion, they’ve found a way to make it confusing as dicks to figure out. In…

Rdio: Because It

Rdio: Because It's Hard To Find a Name For a Music Startup That Isn't Taken

The irony of this situation is not lost on me. The founders of Skype, your favourite instant messaging alternative, have decided to jump on the music streaming/subscription bandwagon with Rdio. The irony here is that said founders, Janus Friis and Niklas Zennstrom, are also the founders of Kazaa, one of the early applications that crippled the music industry. The confusingly-titled Rdio (AR-dee-oh (R-D-O)) is their attempt to help resuscitate it. As with all things these days, Rdio of course is cloud-based, meaning you can play your library on any device, anywhere – for a fee, of course. Ten…

New Skype iPhone App Allows Calls over 3G

New Skype iPhone App Allows Calls over 3G

Skype has launched a new version of its client software for Apple’s iPhone 3G allowing users who have downloaded the app to make calls to other Skype users on the 3G network. The best part? The service remains free at least until the end of this year. Skype announced on Sunday that the new app is available for the 3G iPhone and that Skype-to-Skype calls over Wi-Fi will remain free until after the end of 2010. Skype has also said that they have not yet decided on what to charge for the calls. With the new software, owners of the iPhone, iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS and the second and third generations of the iPod…

Skype 2.0 Finally Adds Voice Over 3G

Skype 2.0 Finally Adds Voice Over 3G

Skype has finally given the green light to voice calls over 3G with the new version of its Skype for iPhone software. iPhone users rejoice, you can finally actually use Skype’s software to make VoIP phone calls. Naturally, the news comes with the catch that it’s gonna cost you. Skype-to-Skype calls will be free – but only until the end of August. After that, a “small monthly charge” will be applied. So, to clarify, you spend a load of money on an iPhone, pay AT&T for data over 3G, then you pay Skype for the capability to make these calls.. on your phone. Confused? Not nearly as confused as your accountant…

Skype 5.0 Beta is released only to Windows users. Chat with up to four people at once

Why leave home when you can just hang out online with all your friends? Skype has now made this more possible……… well, kinda. If you are a windows user, there is a new Skype 5.0 Beta download available which allows you to video chat with up to four people at once. You can catch up with friends, hang out online, and even do your homework while gossiping. Talk about multi-tasking. But now we must ask the question………..

Skype /shuns Windows Mobile 7 for iPhone and Android

Skype /shuns Windows Mobile 7 for iPhone and Android

Dan Neary, the Vice President for Skype, spoke at an event in Sydney today  stating that Skype will not be developing software for the new Windows mobile, Windows Phone 7 . Instead the company will be focusing on software for phones like the iPhone, Symbian and Android operating systems. Neary didn’t give any explanation as to why he chose not to cooperate with Microsoft but instead brought up new plans that Skype has in mind for the iPhone, iPad and Android based phones. Microsoft hasn’t said anything on the matter. While a lot of us use the powerful communication system, others may not see the need…

Skype to Add Advertising to Its Already Cluttered Interface

Skype to Add Advertising to Its Already Cluttered Interface

Skype has been building itself up to becoming the most respected and used Internet phone company on the net, in fact, you would be hard pressed to find any worthy competition at all. The best part? It’s still free when calling computer to computer. There is a price to be paid for this ‘free’ service though, and that is putting up with all the advertising. We see it (for the most part) as an irritant, but companies such as Skype see it as revenue. Skype has put out a warning that more advertising is coming. In an interview with The Telegraph, CEO Josh Silverman has said: “It’s challenging to get…

Eye-contact problem solved while video chatting using Iris2Iris.

Built in webcams have created a way to communicate with others while in the comfort of your own home while Skype has basically found a way to eliminate the costly long distance phone call. But, are we really having an intimate video chat with the person on the other end or does staring at the persons forehead take something away from it? You have a choice. Do you look directly into the webcam to give the illusion that you want to make eye contact or do you look at your monitor so you can see the other person? Coming out of The Netherlands, is a new product that solves all eye-contact video chatting problems….
