Sony introduces world's first recordable binoculars

Although the $1,400 price tag for Sony’s all-new high-end binoculars is a bit steep, the DEV-3 and DEV-5 are anything but ordinary binoculars. These are the world’s first digital binoculars to record in 1080p HD. They can also snap 7.1 megapixel stills. Both the DEV-3 and DEV-5 include two Exmor R CMOS sensors for native 3D video capture, dual f/1.8-3.4, 0.5-10x optical zoom lenses, and a pair of 1,227-dot viewfinders. The binoculars also feature the same image stabilization system found in Sony cameras and camcorders. The pricier DEV-5 also gets a 10x digital zoom, GPS, and accessories…

Sony product owners, get your bookmark ready. HasSonyBeenHackedThisWeek will save you some time. Included is a timeline of recent Sony hacking news to keep us up to date about which services are up and running, which data points have been compromised, and (occasionally) who is the latest to pick on the beleaguered technology company. Here’s the current list from the site of the most recent hacks… just this week: Spoofs…

Sony: we are "uncertain" (have no clue) when PSN is coming back

Sony was threatened, credit card numbers were stolen, gamers were frustrated, and Sony still doesn’t have a clue about what is going on. And yet the train wreck — also known as Sony’s PSN service — continues to take its toll on gamers. So, if anyone out there was hopeful for a return of multiplayer madness on your PS3 anytime soon, well, sorry, but you might have to wait a bit longer. Shigenori Yoshida, a Tokyo-based spokesman for Sony, stated that Sony does not know when it will resume PSN services. Of course, gamers are probably already used to being in the dark with their PS3s, as the downtime has…

Anonymous: "Sony, I am disappoint"

Anonymous: "Sony, I am disappoint"

For the last two weeks, one of the largest security breaches in online network history has been grinding along. As of today, the Sony Playstation Network is still down. To make things worse, Anonymous, who claims to not be involved with these particular hacks, pointed their scowl at Sony today in a release titled, “SONY, I AM DISAPPOINT.” Just when you thought it couldn’t get any worse, it just did. In the release, they outline four points of contention in the way Sony and journalists are handling the situation and pointing fingers at the group who has never been known to get involved with direct theft…

Hackers compromise Sony Online Entertainment, Sony shuts it down

Hackers compromise Sony Online Entertainment, Sony shuts it down

Sony has been beaten up pretty badly lately, but this is kicking ‘em while they’re down: hackers have compromised Sony Online Entertainment, which provide access to several online MMOs. Not only that, but hackers could have potentially stolen credit card data from those accounts as well. Sony is still investigating. Sony was quicker to respond to this news than it was with the PSN security breach. It sent out an email informing customers of the news: Our ongoing investigation of illegal intrusions into Sony Online Entertainment systems has discovered that hackers may have obtained personal…

Hackers take credit for Playstation network attack, claim possession of credit card data

If you’re an active Sony Playstation network user, you’re aware that it was “game over” last week as hackers made their way into the network and made off with a ton of your personal data. Sony has said that they are not certain whether sensitive credit card data was taken. According to discussions in underground hacker forums, the hackers got your numbers. Comments in these forums, which are being monitored by security researchers, reportedly claim that the hacked database included customer names, addresses, usernames, passwords and up to 2.2 million credit card numbers. The hackers hope to…

How Sony Can Recover From Their PSN Nightmare

How Sony Can Recover From Their PSN Nightmare

If you were in the management team at Sony – especially Sony Computer Entertainment – life is probably a little stressful right now. Knowing that you may have lost the personal data of 77 million of your customers, maybe even including their credit card info is cataclysmic. All companies have their ups and downs but this is a huge deal, and the impact of Sony’s Good thing Sony weren’t trying to start a business in the cloud or anything. Oh, right. Oops. But presented with a massive PR bungle, companies have no choice but to try and repair the damage and recover. So how does Sony, a company that already…

Sony, Toyota Face Weeks of Downtime in Japan

Sony, Toyota Face Weeks of Downtime in Japan

The aftermath of the recent earthquake and tsunami that crippled much of Japan is being felt by two of the country’s largest manufacturers, Sony and Toyota. While Toyota is hoping to open some plants next week, the supply chain and power grid are still question marks. “This will be played out not in days, but in weeks,” said John Hoffecker, head of the automotive practice at consulting firm AlixPartners LLP. Stocks for both companies are down 12% since the day before the earthquake. Sony is looking at approximately 2 weeks worth of available inventory before the work-stoppage truly hits their…

Sony's 4-Step Plan To Destroy Apple

Sony was, at a time, the most well-known name in consumer electronics, but the company has lost its mojo. It has been relegated to the middle of the pack while a company by the name of Apple shines brighter than ever. But does Sony have a plan to regain its former glory? I’m not going to claim to know what that plan is, but I believe they do have a plan that the intend on executing in the next few years to put the company back on the map in innovation. If I was the CEO of Sony, these four steps would be the key to regaining our former glory. Sony does have the power and resources to accomplish these goals. But the question…

Justice! Sony Do Something Evil, Pwn Themselves

Justice! Sony Do Something Evil, Pwn Themselves

Oh, Sony. The venerable old company – who have actually done some smart things lately – have gone and shot themselves in the foot. First, they have demanded that Google hand over the IP addresses of anyone who commented on or like a private YouTube video detailing how to hack the PS3. They are also asking the same of Twitter for anyone who linked to the page. Sony will sue anyone who links to or spreads the hack. First, let’s keep in mind that the PS3 hack came about because of a glaring mistake in Sony’s security, and stemmed from an attempt to put back a feature Sony removed. Second, since when it is a crime…

The PSP2: Five Things Sony Must Do To Make it Succeed

The PSP2: Five Things Sony Must Do To Make it Succeed

It is now all but certain that Sony will announce their next handheld video game system, the successor to the Playstation Portable, later this week at the ‘Playstation Meeting’. Regardless of what they say on Thursday, Sony will have an uphill battle. When the first PSP was released, the world was a different place. Sony, riding high on the massive success of  the PS1, hoped the PSP would become the Walkman of the new generation. That of course did not happen. Not only did the innovative, accessible controls of the Nintendo DS outshine the PSP, the subsequent rise of the smartphone made the bulky,…
