The tablet takeover

The tablet takeover

With a growing number of people buying tablets every day, the clear progression is for the devices to start taking over the business world. On the enterprise level, tablets are not only starting to make a splash – they’re taking over. They are often viewed as something brand new, starting with the iPad, but Microsoft has been selling them in business for over a decade. The recent influx isn’t as much about internal technology as much as an improvement in internet infrastructure (3G and 4G are covering most of America now) as well as popular demand. Apple put the devices on the map and everyone else…

Four Conditions Necessary For a REAL Tablet Market

Four Conditions Necessary For a REAL Tablet Market

So, let’s get this out of the way now: there is no ‘tablet market’. There is no huge demographic out there craving and desiring a tablet computer. There are millions of iPad customers. And there a few hundred thousand people – maybe even a few million worldwide – who desperately want a tablet running Android, WebOS or QNX. Yet because that’s true right now, it doesn’t mean things won’t change. The tablet is just too inevitably necessary for the (lack of a) market to stay that way. The need for a web-connected frame for content of all sorts is just too obvious. And while tablets will not and are not meant…

No Flash and a Bagful of Coffin Nails for Xoom

No Flash and a Bagful of Coffin Nails for Xoom

Feels like only yesterday we were all rooting for Motorola’s Xoom to deal some damage to (or at least share some of the market with) the iPad. The Xoom looked – and, to be honest, still looks – like a decent piece of hardware. I, for one, would still be proud to sport it about the town in a man-purse, whipping it out at a fancy coffee bar while I slurp down a beverage with a sentence-long name. Of course, once it was revealed that the Xoom would in fact cost more than the most comparable iPad model, people began singing a different tune. 800 bucks is not worth a tablet of the Xoom’s capabilities. Or, in this case,…

11 Bold Tech Predictions for 2011

11 Bold Tech Predictions for 2011

The past year in technology was among the more surprising ones we’ve had. Even the most astute, insightful tech observers would have had trouble predicting some of the things that happened this year. The iPad and Kinect have become the fastest selling electronic devices in history. Android exploded at a rate few could have seen coming. Facebook and Twitter kept up their blistering expansion rates, while Microsoft’s Windows Phone 7… is actually good. But what about this coming year? What events and happenings will not only define 2011, but also cause tech-heads to look back in a year from now…

Can the Samsung Galaxy Player Really Compete with the iPod Touch?

Can the Samsung Galaxy Player Really Compete with the iPod Touch?

The mobile phone and tablet markets are ripe battlegrounds for Android-based gadgets to make their mark. Apple is the leader but not by a huge margin. Some predict that Android will explode in 2011. There is little doubt that Apple has its hands full trying to maintain its dominance in these areas, but at least they have the app-driven, WiFi-connected MP3 player market locked down with the iPod touch, right? Maybe not. We’ll find out more after CES. It is hard to imagine that the niche that lies somewhere between iPod and iPhone could have room for more players, but that’s exactly what Samsung is banking…

The HP Slate: Anyone Want Half A Netbook For $800?

The HP Slate: Anyone Want Half A Netbook For $800?

You hear the term ‘iPad Killer’ an awful lot, don’t you? Well, like, I guess you would if you read tech blogs with any regularity. If you’ve trickled all the way down to Techi, I’ll assume you do, and I’ll also assume ergo that you have, in fact, heard the term ‘iPad Killer’ an awful lot. So we’ll start with that. Anyway, I’m not going to talk about an iPad Killer today. Good grief, am I ever not. Today, I will regale you with a tale of the HP Slate, the real goddamned expensive tablet that sucks out loud – for the price, anyway. To be fair, the Slate isn’t the worst machine in the world; this is, of course, presuming…

Zom-book? Microsoft Courier Not Dead Yet

Zom-book? Microsoft Courier Not Dead Yet

There’s the possibility that Microsoft’s Courier may be, in fact, not as dead as previously thunk. Microsoft just received a patent for an ‘ornamental design for a dual display device’ – one that, by the looks of it, is the ghost of the Courier. Remember the Courier? It was a concept tablet creating a buzz back when the iPad was still called ‘possible Apple tablet??’ and the world was content with real portable computers that do real computer stuff.  Though never officially announced, it was officially shelved. It was widely believed that Microsoft had every intention of going toe-to-toe with…

Toshiba Jumping on the Bandwagon, Releasing Tablets

Toshiba Jumping on the Bandwagon, Releasing Tablets

Toshiba is working quickly to launch their new line of tablet computers that will hopefully be available in North America later this year. If the model isn’t ready by the end of the year, the tablet is expected in early 2011. According to a report by Reuters, the tablets will offer Windows 7 and Android. The Windows 7 model is rumored to include higher-end features but the Android model is closer in similarity to the Apple iPad, which has been hugely popular since it’s release. The tablet is expected to feature a 10 inch screen and each model will range in cost – prices are unknown as of yet. “We definitely…
