VW's global car will change the industry forever

Some of the best minds in modern technology migrate to the automotive industry every year. From software to design, aerodynamics to aesthetics, the art and science of building cars is something that is in a constant state of flux. There have been innovations and additions made to vehicles, but there hasn’t been a game-changing shift in decades. Volkswagen and engineer Ulrich Hackenberg are working on changing that with their vision of a “global car”. It’s a concept that has been discussed for decades but has been too ambitious to implement. VW as been riding a string of victories over the past…

Mysterious purple slime balls pop up in Arizona desert

Mysterious purple slime balls pop up in Arizona desert

Are they alien eggs, fungal growths, or wet air freshener balls? Those are the questions being asked about thousands of purple balls that were found in the desert in Arizona outside of Tucson. Geradine Vargas and her husband were out taking pictures when they spotted the out of place pool of balls. They shot images of them and sent them to a botanist friend who could not identify them. That’s when they contacted the local news channel to investigate. “We checked out the mysterious spheres for ourselves, and learned they were still there,” said Liz Kotalik from KGUN9. “They’re like gooey marbles…

The absolutely terrifying potential ramifications of the energy department hack

The absolutely terrifying potential ramifications of the energy department hack

There are four primary ways that a malevolent entity, whether it be terrorists or a foreign state, could go about attacking the United States or any country as a whole: military attack, medical epidemic, economic attack, or a cyberattack on the infrastructure. It’s the last on the list, the one that gets the least amount of attention from the people and the media, that was potentially launched in January when the US Department of Energy fell victim to hackers. Hundreds of employees and contractors may have had their Personally Identifiable Information (PII) accessed by the hackers. Many are…

How to slow global warming: "work less" says liberal think tank study

How to slow global warming: "work less" says liberal think tank study

Tell your boss that you’re not trying to be lazy. You’re helping the environment. That’s the report from the Center of Economic Policy Research, a liberal think tank. In the 13-page PDF they released, fighting climate change may be as easy as taking on a more “European” style of work schedule. “For all practical purposes, some amount of climate change is inevitable. However, the amount of warming is very much under our control. In addition to reducing emissions by other means, a significant reduction in climate change is possible by choosing a more European response to productivity gains rather…

Broad range of presidential authority over cybersecurity is actually quite reasonable

Broad range of presidential authority over cybersecurity is actually quite reasonable

When a headline such as “Broad Powers Seen for Obama in Cyberstrikes” appears on the NY Times, my initial response is a skeptical one. I’ve long viewed the ways that the last two administrations have handled cybersecurity as failures to understand Golidilocks; they are too harsh when it isn’t warranted and lackadaisical in times of the greatest need. Many countries are growing more dangerous in the world of cyberterrorism with China leading the way. They are arguably more advanced than the United States in understanding the realities of cyberwarfare. To my pleasant surprise, the reported…

20 vintage Made in Japan logos for a modern age

20 vintage Made in Japan logos for a modern age

When Antrepo was looking at vintage 30 mm cameras from Japan’s dominant gadget days of the 70s and 80s, they noticed a common theme in the logos. They all seemed to use the same style for the typography – a line-based format with extended outline fonts. In a modern twist, they took 20 major brands of today and applied the same logo format. The results were nothing short of vintage epic. Check them out below or visit their Flickr page:  …

10 cool views of America as seen through Google Street View

10 cool views of America as seen through Google Street View

Traveling can be logistically hard and fiscally challenging, even when staying in the boundaries of the United States. There are so many places to see, so many activities to do, and so many roads to drive that getting a great view of the wonders of America can be challenging. For those who simply want to get a good view and “see” the spectacular sites of the country, we have Google Street View. You won’t be able to smell the dusty air of the Grand Canyon or taste a slice of real New York Pizza in front of the Empire State Building, but you can get a pretty detailed visual of these attractions and others from…

ARGUS is DARPA

ARGUS is DARPA's ultimate 1.8-gigapixel eye in the sky

Imagine a camera, drone, and integrated video storage system that can shoot detailed images of a 15-square mile area that can see objects on the ground 6-inches wide from 17,500 feet in the sky. You would be imagining the ARGUS-IS system, the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency’s (DARPA) searching and tracking technology. The Autonomous Real-time Ground Ubiquitous Surveillance – Imaging System is designed to give the government the capabilities to pinpoint vehicles, people, and even objects of interest from far above the ground. It combines wide view and zoom capabilities that automatically…

When Albert Einstein stopped by Hopi House

When Albert Einstein stopped by Hopi House

There are dozens of iconic images of history’s most famous physicist that demonstrate both his personality and kind heart, but one that doesn’t get as much attention is this picture from 1931 when he visited Hopi House on the Fred Harvey concession at the Grand Canyon. While on a trip with his wife to do work and get courted by the California Institute of Technology, he took his wife to the Grand Canyon and had this photo taken with 4 Hopi adults and a Hopi child. In the background of the image to the right, we see J. B. Duffy, General Passenger Agent of the ATSF (the famous Atichson, Tokepa and Santa Fe Railroad),…

Is Facebook creating its own demise by building a moat around the castle?

Is Facebook creating its own demise by building a moat around the castle?

Never has a internet company had so much information about its users. Facebook knows your friends. They know where you go in real life and online. They know who you hang out with, who you talk to, what interests you, and they have a database of pictures of you that the FBI would die to get a hold of (and probably have already). Companies are built around the data that Facebook shares about you, but that is changing. Facebook is building a moat around their data and only lowering the drawbridge to those who are not a threat and who contribute to the “Facebook cause” by giving back some love through sharing….

One screen just isn

One screen just isn't enough: #firstworldproblems

With 81% of Americans using smartphones while watching television, it’s clear that we’ve developed a penchant for multi-screen consumption of content. Our computers have more than one screen. We often have our iPads sitting next to our laptops, which are sitting next to our desktops, which are across from our video games that are connected to our big screens. In short, we love screens. That doesn’t seem to be a trend that will go away any time soon. This infographic by Uberflip takes a look at some of the stats surrounding the multi-screen generation.  …

UFO activity in December, 2012

UFO activity in December, 2012

Every month we cover the UFO activity for the previous month using some excellent footage that is compiled by AnonymousFO. December’s activity definitely didn’t disappoint. One thing to note is that several of the segnebts were of bright lights that appeared during the day. If you watch the previous videos, you’ll see that there were fewer in recent months that were seen in the daytime. Night has always been the best time for “them” to come out, but that changed in December. Is there a shift happening, or is it just a fluke flurry of daytime sightings? We’ll find out next month. Until then, here are…
