If everyone jumped at once, not much would happen

If everyone jumped at once, not much would happen

Have you ever wondered what would happen if everyone on earth jumped at the exact same time? Would it make a difference if they were all brought to the same place? As it turns out, nothing would really be affected. Sure, there would be a certain force exerted on the earth that it’s definitely not used to, but it would be nothing compared to a major earthquake. As this video by Vsauce explains, there are other ways to make an impact. …

Kuratas: for those who dream of driving a mechanized robot vehicle

Kuratas: for those who dream of driving a mechanized robot vehicle

If you have a couple million dollars and a burning desire to have a vehicle that none of your friends at the country club have, there’s no need to look at the super exotic cars for your midlife crisis. Those are for amateurs. Today’s toy of choice may only go 10 kph and run on a diesel engine, but it’s guaranteed to turn heads more readily than a Aston Martin One-77. The Kuratas is here and available. It may just be the cheesiest vehicle ever made. Then again, it may also be the most epic. Complete with BB guns that fire when you smile and water projectiles “that sometimes even hit their target”, this toy is…

Disney is building creepy life-like human animatronics

Disney is building creepy life-like human animatronics

The science of entertainment is getting more complicated. Disney Research in Zurich and Walt Disney Imagineering at Cornell are working on Physical Face Cloning to be able to create animatronics characters that behave with the precision of a human face. First, they are designing a synthetic skin that can mimic the movements and tendencies of human skin. How the skin on a face reacts to motions such as talking has been problematic, but the Disney team hopes that a silicon based solution guided by computer simulations will be the answer. Here are two videos that they recently released showing the…

Science says naps are truly effective

Science says naps are truly effective

There are energy drinks and caffeinated beverages galore available at most offices. There’s a good ol’ splash of water in the face that often does the trick. We’re even offered candy bars or other sweets to give us sugar “energy”. The real solution to midday grogginess may be the power nap and offices in Japan are allowing their employees to go to “Sleep Salons” to get their nap on. In this video by ASAP Science, they give a brief description of why naps of less than 30 minutes may be enough to get the most productivity out of people throughout the day. …

Where can we get a hold of the Batmobile documentary?

Where can we get a hold of the Batmobile documentary?

It’s a shame that I didn’t see this until after Comicon was over. I might have attended had I known that this would be there. Every Batmobile displayed. Several of the actors, directors, and stunt directors who were part of the filming from the 60s television series through the end of the recent trilogy were a part of it. The documentary of geek documentaries played and I missed it. Where can I see it? Here’s the epic preview that got my blood boiling to the point that I’m using my blog login to ask the question. That’s how important this is. …

I hate the fact that I don

I hate the fact that I don't hate the Star Trek "Call Me Maybe" parody

Parodies get old, particularly when they’re associated with a song that gets a new parody uploaded to YouTube every other day. Case in point: Call Me Maybe, the wildly popular song by Carly Rae Jepsen. There have been parodies made that desecrate Star Wars, the Muppets, and the US Olympic team to the point that we won’t even link to them here. There’s nothing wrong with the song. The parodies have to go… …except for this one. …

297-frame stop motion video of Curiosity

297-frame stop motion video of Curiosity's descent

The world watched as NASA put another rover on Mars. It wasn’t as much about the expedition – we’ve been to Mars before. This time, it was about the new method by which they put the rover on the planet. NASA’s Jet Propulsion Labortory put together this video made of 297 images taken from Curiosity as it landed on Mars. In the beginning, we see the heat shield being released (pictured above). …

Microsoft raises email service expectations with Outlook.com

Microsoft raises email service expectations with Outlook.com

While everyone else seems focused on new media technology such as social networks and mobile sharing, Microsoft is mastering what they’ve always done well: email. Their latest push towards perfect email management and distribution comes in the form of Outlook.com which they are billing as “modern email designed for the next billion mailboxes.” Judging by the video below, they’re definitely heading in the right direction. Despite the rise of new media, email still remains one of the most common and important online activities. Here’s what they’re saying about it on their latest blog: Webmail…

Is the Nexus 7 really a Kindle Fire competitor?

Is the Nexus 7 really a Kindle Fire competitor?

Many have billed Google’s Nexus 7 as a clear competitor to the Amazon Kindle Fire. Same price point, same size screen. The comparisons can really end there, though. The big difference other than superior aesthetic is in the way the software performs. There were plenty of unboxing videos but we wanted to wait to see how it performed long-term (which, in the tablet world, is a couple of weeks) and so far it has been very impressive. It is more responsive than the Kindle Fire and with the much-larger app store and front-facing camera, Google has created a superior device at the same price as the Fire. As…

Hotel keycards can be easily hacked in 200 milliseconds

Hotel keycards can be easily hacked in 200 milliseconds

With less than $50 of store-bought hardware and some programming, a hacker can gain instantaneous and untraceable access into over four million hotel rooms around the world, according to Cody Brocious, a Mozilla software developer. He details his findings on his website. The time it takes once installed: around 200 milliseconds. “With how stupidly simple this is, it wouldn’t surprise me if a thousand other people have found this same vulnerability and sold it to other governments,” said Brocious. “An intern at the NSA could find this in five minutes.” * * * “Hotel Key Card” image courtesy of…

Celebrities read the mean Tweets sent to them on Jimmy Kimmel Live

Celebrities read the mean Tweets sent to them on Jimmy Kimmel Live

Celebrities are people, too. That’s the premise behind this skit on Jimmy Kimmel Live where celebrities such as Katy Perry, James Van Der Beek, Zooey Deschanel, and Kristen Stewart read and often respond to the abusive and crude Tweets that are often posted about them. It’s funny, but it brings up a good point. Social media allows people to vent their frustrations and express their feelings, good or bad, about other people. Celebrities are often the focus of attacks because of their position of privilege and being a celebrity means taking the good and the bad. Without social media, most would simply…

Biologically accurate legs make walking look weird

Biologically accurate legs make walking look weird

According to a group of researchers, the robotic walking leg simulation in the video below is the closest we’ve come to being able to replicate the way biological organisms move. To some, it will be impressive. To me, it’s still pretty weird looking. You decide – am I being too picky? From the report: A key component of the human walking system is the central pattern generator (CPG). The CPG is a neural network in the lumbar region of the spinal cord that generates rhythmic muscle signals. The CPG produces, and then controls, these signals by gathering information from different parts of the body…
