#signhereplease, a short film shot with a smartphone, reveals much about our over-connected world

#signhereplease, a short film shot with a smartphone, reveals much about our over-connected world

The hashtag has become a symbol of sentiment in a society where the people are often so connected virtually to one another that real-world relationships often revolve around our online and mobile personae. With social media acting as a bellwether for our interpersonal connections, it’s no wonder that so many people are finding (and losing) love as a result of the growing influence of our digital connections. When Lebanese filmmaker Robert Cremona sent me his short film “#signhereplease” I was a little skeptical after finding out that it was shot entirely from a smartphone. It was just today…

Fan-made Pac-Man movie short puts a unique spin on the gaming classic

When you mention “classic games” to anyone over the age of 30, there’s a good chance that the first thing that pops in their mind is Pac-Man. The icon of gaming has been spun on its head from the original Namco days to become a nano-polymer-based weapon of the US government hidden for testing under the deserts of Nevada. The Polymorphous Autonomous Compound Manipulator can consumer hazardous targets like oil spills and reactor leaks, but prefers cherries. …

Gyroscopes are cool

Gyroscopes are cool

The amazing science behind how gyroscopes work is interesting in and of itself, but simply watching them (or better, playing with one) can waste way too much time. They are used on everything from bicycles to the Hubble Telescope. For quick Monday morning viewing pleasure, here’s a cool gyroscope video that’s currently circulating around the internet. …

O

O'Brien out at Mashable

And just like that, he’s gone. In an unfortunate April Fool’s Day misunderstanding, Conan O’Brien did not buy Mashable from Pete Cashmore for $3500. Instead, he purchased a M.A.S.H. television show fan site. Before he did, he was able to come up with a new way for peopel to Tweet: Here is his resignation from a site that he never actually worked for: …

Conan O'Brien ousts Pete Cashmore at Mashable for $3500

Talk show host Conan O’Brien posted a viral video and accompanied it with a blog post on Mashable declaring that he had bought out Pete Cashmore for $3500. The spoof did what it was supposed to do; it took a pair of popular social media and pop icons and combined them for some pre-April Fool’s Day fun. Still, it would be nice to see O’Brien get more involved in tech. He should going deeper into a tech world that the real-life genius pretends he’s not a part of (despite having a degree from Harvard). He ends the video by saying “stay tuned”. …

Understanding relativity in 4 minutes or less

Understanding relativity in 4 minutes or less

For over a century, people have tried to cope with understanding Einstein’s special theory of relativity and his famous equation, E=MC2. There have been long videos and visualizations that attempted to dumb down both the process that Einstein used to come up with the theories and the way that our minds can wrap themselves around them. Here, the good folks at Minute Physics did as their namesake implies: they explained it to us in a pair of 2-minute videos that (should) make it easier to comprehend. First, let’s look at the special theory of relativity: Now for the fun part – understanding E=MC2:…

38 years ago Arthur C. Clarke nailed his prediction about the 21st century

38 years ago Arthur C. Clarke nailed his prediction about the 21st century

We often look back at the great minds of the past in wonder as their predictions of what the future would look like. Sometimes, they are relatively accurate. Other times, they’re way off. In an interview with the Australian Broadcasting Corporation in 1974, Clarke nailed it. He said that we would all have computers, not like the ones that surround him in the video but much smaller ones.  As he describes them, he motions with his hands an approximate size and shape and one can imagine a laptop resting in his hands as they were perfectly positioned. He said we would be able to talk to people around the…

Google's self-driving car user #0000000001

Steve Mahan is just like everyone else with a car. He likes to hop in the driver’s seat on a sunny California day and hit the drive-thru for a taco on his way to the dry cleaners. Unlike most drivers, Steve Mahan has lost 95% of his vision and is legally blind, but thanks to Google he is on his way to not being restricted the way he has been for much of his life. Using a carefully pre-programmed route and with the help of a large technical team, Steve and the Google team performed the routine driving that many people take for granted. They grabbed their tacos. They picked up Steve’s dry cleaning. They did it in…

Launching a missile from a boat like a boss

Launching a missile from a boat like a boss

Warfare at sea has always had certain challenges that technology has had to overcome. Large cannons and missile launchers have always been a challenge because they can literally rock the boat in ways that can cause mayhem or even damage during launch. On top of the physical shock associated with launches, there’s also the heat from the discharge that must be considered. This video shows a technique against a stunning dawn (or dusk) backdrop that shows how a little ingenuity, some smart minds, and modern science can solve the problems that have plagued war vessels for centuries. …

Will The Walking Dead and Game of Thrones make TV-based games "a thing"

Will The Walking Dead and Game of Thrones make TV-based games "a thing"

Movies have been made into video games since Atari, while video game have been turned into movies for nearly as long. The successes of both types of adaptation are debatable, but now we’re seeing the start of a new type of gaming adaptation: the television show games. There have been others in the past with CSI, ER, and other popular shows getting the platform and PC treatment, but the latest batch of games may break down the walls that have made television series games something that only the most dedicated fans consider buying. “The Walking Dead” and “Game of Thrones” are the two most recent that…

The DARPA "Cheetah" is fast and freaky

The DARPA "Cheetah" is fast and freaky

There have been many innovations in recent months that have blown us away from the world of robotics. If there’s one common theme between the Smart Bird and other robots that have gone from our dreams (or nightmares) to reality in recent months is the constant embracing of natural movement and style when creating movement. The same can be said about DARPA’s “Cheetah” which recently broke the speed record for legged robots. At 18mph, this machine will both amaze you and possibly scare you in a Japanese horror movie way. …

Mercedes invisible car campaign is relatively brilliant

Mercedes invisible car campaign is relatively brilliant

Some say less is more when it comes to marketing. Mercedes takes “less” to a new level in the marketing of their F-Cell vehicle line. The concept is simple and brilliant. To demonstrate that a vehicle has no emissions, they made an “invisible” vehicle to represent its lack of a footprint on the environment. By covering one side of the vehicle in LEDs, they’re able to let people see through it via a camera mounted on the other side. The results of the publicity stunt will be seen over time but it highlights a creativity that has evaded the German luxury car manufacturer for a while. …
