There's A Soldier In You, and Me, and Kobe Bryant

My apartment hasn’t had cable for years, and I’m pretty strapped for cash most of the time – understandably, I’m a little behind in the advertising world. But hot damn, have commercials for videogames ever been getting high budget. This one for Call of Duty: Black Ops will either be the best commercial you’ve seen in awhile, or the worst. The cameos by Kimmel and Bryant (and… maybe there’s other stars in there too, I’m terrible with Hollywood) are great touches, and the guy at the end is, of course, gut-bustingly funny – but on the other hand, I have never seen an ad glorify war like this one does. It…

7 Ways Technology Could Kill Us All, As Told By Hollywood

7 Ways Technology Could Kill Us All, As Told By Hollywood

We have bestowed technology with the task of improving our lives, and as technology becomes more intertwined with our lives, it becomes a danger to mankind as well. So what happens when technology fails us? Could technology really result in the end of all humanity? If you’ve watched a few Hollywood flicks lately, it might not be too difficult to envision. A popular theme focuses on highlighting the consequences of technology, usually having technology posing all of humanity with a serious problem while our hero is tasked with saving all of us from extinction. But even though Hollywood tends to…

Farmville May Deal Facebook Some Harmville with Zynga Live

Farmville May Deal Facebook Some Harmville with Zynga Live

Seems everybody’s just about had it up to here with Facebook, and it looks like this is the case with developers as much as it is with users. Zynga, the developer of Farmville, has warned its employees to brace themselves for a possible imminent break from the social networking giant. That’s kind of cool. Sounds like a spaceship about to break away from an asteroid, or something. Anyway, tensions between the two companies have been rising, and, due to Facebook’s apparent bullying of Zynga to sign a contract which would bind Farmville almost exclusively to Facebook, Zynga threatening to leave,…

One Step Closer to Terminator: Salvation Day

One Step Closer to Terminator: Salvation Day

Pictured above, an unmanned drone taken from the military blog Armybase.us. Washington’s unmanned drone airplanes will not just be Washington’s anymore. Robert Gates, the U.S. Defense Secretary announced plans to start selling and giving them to other countries, including Pakistan. In the past they had been sold only to Italy and Great Britain. South Korea, Japan, Singapore, Canada, and Spain have also shown interest, as well as a whole host of other countries to whom nobody would ever sell them. Never mind The Missile Control Regime pact from 1987, which makes the sale of autonomous fliers…

'Bad Guys' Abroad Choose iPhone

Apparently, the Taliban have been outwitting Australian forces in Afghanistan by using a relatively inexpensive tool of war: the iPhone. Can someone explain to me how while I can barely get a signal in downtown Toronto, the middle of a desert is getting coverage enough to wage war? According to Australia’s Department of Defense chief technology officer Matt Yannopoilos, “bad guys” are “using iPhones and applications — and multiple SIM cards — and going much faster than we are.” Despite the military having more intelligence, the iPhones allow near-instantaneous transmission…
