5 apps to keep track of sports

Keeping up with the world of sports can be a challenge, but not if all the info is right on a smartphone. When it comes to choosing the right apps, don’t forget about the constantly evolving games every fan should be following. Whether it’s cricket in India or the NFL, if the sport exists, there’s probably an app for that. Choose apps that work on both Android and iOs to avoid any face-palming moments down the road. There are endless apps available, so how can fans and sports betters know which are best? Some are free, some are more user-friendly and some offer real-time coverage. To make things simple,…

All Yahoo email accounts will be scanned starting Monday

All Yahoo email accounts will be scanned starting Monday

If you avoided Gmail and stuck with Yahoo mail for the sake of privacy concerns, it’s time to find a new provider. Starting Monday, June 3, classic email will be discontinued and users will have to accept the new terms of service that require that content of all emails are scanned. According to the new terms of service, Yahoo must be given permission to “scan and analyze all incoming and outgoing communications content sent and received from your account.” It’s for the ads, of course, but they’re hiding it behind the guise of spam and malware protection. Users will be allowed to opt out of the targeted…

First Tumblr executive leaves after Yahoo buyout

First Tumblr executive leaves after Yahoo buyout

It took longer than most thought and may be a lighter hit than expected, but the exodus of a Yahoo-owned Tumblr has begun with the resignation of Creative Director Jacob Bijani. He was the fifth employee of the startup five years ago and the first designer to join the team. In a blog post, he did not mention Yahoo at all, nor did he discuss his relationship with any other executives. Today was my last day at Tumblr. Five years ago I joined a team of four as Tumblr’s first designer, creative director, and product engineer. That team has since grown to 182 of the most wonderful and talented people around….

Yahoo flexes its pocketbook with Hulu, other investment considerations

Has the sleeping giant awoken or is this a last ditch effort to remain relevant? After buying Tumblr last week, Yahoo is now in the mix to buy Hulu with numbers in the $600m to $800m being tossed around. They don’t seem to be done yet, either. At the same time and separately, according to sources inside the company, Yahoo is also contemplating at least two other significant purchases — in the $150 million to $200 million range — each for a mobile and a communications company. Wow, guys. This really is Marissa Mayer’s Yahoo, isn’t it? The Tumblr deal was huge, even if mostly symbolic, but to be involved…

#YahooWantsSome: Marissa Mayer’s continuing forays into social media

Yahoo is finally tossing its hat into the social media ring. Recently, Yahoo announced that it would be incorporating tweets into its newsfeed on Yahoo.com. This signals a serious shift, since Yahoo is giving equal weight to tweets and ‘bona fide news.’ Anyone who’s paying attention will have noticed that Twitter is one of the largest growing companies in the world. With over half a billion users and over $250 million in advertising revenue just last year, Twitter is also one of the most valuable brand strategy tools available to a company. However, Yahoo is now using Twitter as a news outlet,…

72,000 posts per hour leaving Tumblr shouldn't worry Yahoo one bit

As Tumblr users cope with news of a new overlord, many are voicing both concern and annoyance at the $1.1 billion deal. The most vocal are getting their message heard and it’s spreading across Tumblr as well as other social networks, but it’s not enough to make Yahoo or Tumblr concerned. Wordpress founder Matt Mullenweg noticed something Sunday after the rumors of a done deal started surfacing: “Imports have actually spiked on the rumors even though it’s Sunday: normally we import 400-600 posts an hour from Tumblr, last hour it was over 72,000.” While some are saying this is just the beginning…

Yahoo MUST buy Tumblr and then do nothing to it

Yahoo MUST buy Tumblr and then do nothing to it

There are two stages to this gambit by Yahoo that must be accomplished. They have to beat out Facebook, Microsoft, and anybody else interested in the 10-digit price that Tumblr is likely to fetch in the coming days. Then, they have to let the site be as it is and make no changes at all to the platform. The Swisher/Kafka tandem over at AllThingsD have reported that the Yahoo board is going to meet this weekend to discuss buying the social blogging platform for a reported $1.1 billion in cash. Sources said that the Silicon Valley Internet giant’s CEO Marissa Mayer has decided that buying Tumblr was going…

Tumblr could instantly change Yahoo

Tumblr could instantly change Yahoo's image for the better

Yahoo is quickly going the way of AOL in that it’s becoming a place that simply isn’t “cool”, at least to the emerging internet users and those 20- and 30-somethings who still want to be cutting edge (and 40-, and 50-…). Everyone knows it, even Yahoo itself. “One of our challenges is we have had an aging demographic,” said CFO Ken Goldman spoke at JP Morgan’s Global Technology conference. “Part of it is going to be just visibility again in making ourselves cool, which we got away from for a couple of years.” They started heading in the right direction by getting a hip, young CEO to run the…

Yahoo kills off a bunch of features you didn't know existed

As of April 30th, several of Yahoo’s products will be shuttered as part of their initiative to consolidate focus and resources around their core services. That’s the bad news. The good news is that you’re probably not using any of them. You probably didn’t even know some of them existed. Here’s the list that they announced today: Upcoming Yahoo! Deals Yahoo! SMS Alerts Yahoo! Kids (formerly known as Yahooligans) Yahoo! Mail and Messenger Feature Phone Apps It’s not exactly as earth shattering as Google’s announcement that they were killing off their feed reader. Included in the announcement…

And so it begins: Google, Yahoo, Microsoft quietly back CISPA

And so it begins: Google, Yahoo, Microsoft quietly back CISPA

We thought that the nonsense was behind us when we stopped SOPA. The only thing we really did was teach Washington and the supporters in the technology world that if they want to destroy our privacy, they have to ease into it with more subtlety. Thus, CISPA was born. We will go into much more detail about it in the very near future, but for now it’s important to note that companies that did not support SOPA (at least openly) have quietly thrown their support over to CISPA. According to RT: A lobbying organization that counts Google, Yahoo, Microsoft, Apple and other tech giants among its clients has lent…

Is BYOD the unstoppable flaw in small business tech?

Is BYOD the unstoppable flaw in small business tech?

The rise of gadgets easily available to the workforce combined with the growing trend towards mobile offices (unless you work at Yahoo, of course) has made the Bring-Your-Own-Device (BYOD) a common practice in business, particularly for small businesses. It saves money. People are more comfortable using devices of their choosing. It’s practical almost all the way around. These perceived benefits, however, are not so beneficial to the IT people in small business. BYOD poses many problems from security to compatibility and forces them to have to troubleshoot a much wider array of problems…

Yahoo leaves 'digital media' image to promote itself as a "technology company'

A rose by any other name… Digital media. It didn’t really mean much outside of offering content to people for consumption. Technically speaking, that’s what Yahoo has always done outside of search and email. It’s for this reason that the popular web portal’s move to branding itself as a “technology company” marks the second strange move they made in less than two weeks. The first, shifting away from allowing people to work from home, will continue to receive more attention because of its impact on employees, but the branding and image shift is actually a more important (and illogical) move….
