While Google Glass was definitely a failure, Google has made it clear that it’s not giving up on the project. While we’ve heard numerous rumors claiming that the company was working on a successor to the controversial smartglasses, we haven’t had any thing else to go on. However, a new set of documents that Google filed to the FCC may give us an idea of what to expect from the next Google Glass.
The rise and fall of Google Glass from cool edge tech to bar room punchline may be about to take another turn. A new set of Federal Communications Commission (FCC) documents filed by Google offers a peek at an upcoming device that is equipped with Bluetooth and Wi-Fi functionality, just like the first version of Google Glass. The documents detailing the device, termed “GG1,” doesn’t go into great detail about what the device does, but tidbits of information, surfaced by Droid Life, point toward the possibility that it might just be the second version of Google Glass. Device makers are required to submit products to the FCC for safety review before they hit the market, making it difficult in some cases to keep the nature of a new release completely under wraps, no matter how vague the description. Nest founder Tony Fadell has been tapped by Google to redesign and relaunch the wearable device, but he’s offered few details about what the next version of Google Glass will look like or when, exactly, it will arrive. Although, a November Wall Street Journal report claims that the next version of the device will be revealed some time this year.
