Neil deGrasse Tyson continues his onslaught on the government's betrayal of science

Neil Tweet

When Astronomer Neil deGrasse Tyson was on Bill Maher last week, he laid into the plans to slash NASA’s budget. When the topic of the James Webb Space Telescope came up, he broke in and said, “Don’t get me started.”

Maher had him. “No, I want to get you started…”

What followed was intelligent, eloquent, passionate, and truthful – all of the qualities of a rant worth watching. We posted the video he had produced about it last month, but this one is even better because it came off the cuff, from the heart.

Today, he continued the attacks with a little humor in the tweet above. Go ahead, click through and retweet him if you believe he’s right.

Here’s his original rant from last week:

While our main exports from Washington DC are disappointment and frustration, people like Neil deGrasse Tyson make me want to become a politician to fight the budget battles FOR scientific discovery. There is more to politics than legislating morality and debating spending cuts and tax increases; we could be using our position as the most advanced nation in the world to advance the Human species. Neil is a man that is enthusiastic about scientific discovery in a way accessible to the general public. We need more men like him in positions of power.

In this video, I think Tyson does dominate a conversation with Dawkins.

We need more people like him. This country is dumbing itself down day-by day and we are falling by the wayside.  So may people these days are content to take things as they are told and at face value and forget to use our greatest asset……… our brain. The sad thing is that those in power want a dumb general public since it is so much easier to exploit. Lets face it, our greed has finally surpassed our ability to dream and we as a race are now on the downward path to our own destruction.

I think the majority of the reason (other than the U.S. being stuck in corporate greed) is that there is no major competitor that the U.S. is racing with, so they don’t give a fart. I think all our Astronomers and Astrophysicist, as other scientists should get onboard with a country that cares.
