The Spice Dream UNO could be the first Android One smartphone

Google is tipped to carry out an event in India later this week, the country with the world’s second largest population, and it is rumored that the Internet search giant could very well roll out the first of its Android One-powered smartphones to the world. So far, we do know that the more obscure handset manufacturers will include the likes of Spice, Micromax, and Karbonn, and they intend to deliver highly affordable handsets that have a decent build quality as well as constant software updates that hail directly from Google. The Spice Dream UNO could be the first of such Android One smartphones to be unveiled later this week.

Google is holding an event in India this week where the company is expected to unveil the first smartphones developed as part of the company’s Android One Initiative. Device makers including Spice, Micromax, and Karbonn are expected to work with Google to offer inexpensive phones that offers a high quality experience and software updates that come straight from Google. But online store Flipkart spilled the beans a bit early when the company posted a product page from the Spice Dream UNO. The page has been removed, but a number of websites including Android Police, AndroidOS.in have posted pictures that give us a good idea of what to expect. The Spice Dream UNO has a 4.5 inch, 854 x 480 pixel display, 1GB of RAM, 4GB of storage, a 1.3 GHz MediaTek quad-core processor, a microSD card reader, a 5MP rear camera with flash, and a 2MP front camera, and dual-SIM support. It has a 1700mAH battery and the phone runs Google Android 4.4.4 KitKat. Flipkart showed a list price of R.s 6,999 which is about $115. While those specs aren’t spectacular by modern smartphone standards, the price is hard to beat — especially when you consider Google’s involvement on the software side. The Android One initiative is rolling out first in India but we could eventually see phones like these in other developing markets.
