Sony is bringing PS2 games to the PS4 with the power of emulation

Microsoft dealt a massive blow to Sony when it announced that the Xbox One will be receiving backwards compatibility for many Xbox 360 games, and while Sony has made it clear that it won’t be doing the same with the PS4 and PS3, the company has confirmed that PS2 games will be coming to the PS4 in the near future. The company didn’t say much other than that it’s using emulation to achieve this.

After some conjecture earlier this week surrounding the re-release of some older PS2 Star Wars games, Sony has come out and confirmed that PS2 games are coming to the PS4 courtesy of emulation. “We are working on utilizing PS2 emulation technology to bring PS2 games forward to the current generation,” Sony told Wired. “We have nothing further to comment at this point in time.” Not very communicative, but then, that’s par for the course with Sony and PS2 games on the PS4. While Sony doesn’t have anything further to say officially, Digital Foundry has taken a look at the Star Wars games (which are already available) in question—collected in a bundle that includes PS2 titles Star Wars: Jedi Starfighter, Star Wars: Racer Revenge and Star Wars: Bounty Hunter—and put the emulation through its paces.
