Android 4.4 KitKat is currently sitting at a 17.9% distribution

New month, new Android platform distribution numbers! Following the long holiday weekend, Google has officially posted the Android platform distribution numbers for July. For those that aren’t aware, Google gets these stats by tracking which devices access the Play Store during the 7-day period ending on July 7. Android 4.4 KitKat made another healthy jump this month, moving from 13.6 percent in June to 17.9 percent in July. Android 4.1-4.3 Jelly Bean dropped from 58.4 percent last month to 56.5 percent this month. Rounding out Android 4.x is version 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, which dropped nearly a full percentage point to finish at 11.4 percent. Moving on to the older versions of Android, we’ve got version 2.3.3-2.3.7 Gingerbread at 13.5 percent, down from 14.9 percent in June. Rounding out the list is Android 2.2 Froyo with a 0.8 percent share of devices. There have been quite a few devices hitting the market with Android 4.4 in tow lately, and sales of flagships like the Galaxy S5 and One (M8) have continued, so it’s no surprise to see KitKat continue to gobble up market share. That doesn’t mean that it’s not exciting, though, as I’m always glad to see the base of Android users on the latest version of the OS grow.
