Duolingo, one of the best language learning apps, has decided to shift its workforce from human contractors to Artificial Intelligence. This decision, spearheaded by the company’s CEO, Luis von Ahn, aligns with the US government’s new policy to integrate AI into K-12 education. The educational platform aims to support the national goal of preparing the young generation for advanced and evolving technology. About this shift, Ahn wrote in an email

“AI is already changing how work gets done. It’s not a question of if or when. It’s happening now. When there’s a shift this big, the worst thing you can do is wait.”

In addition to replacing contractors, Duolingo plans to use AI for performance reviews, manage the hiring process, and improve work efficiency. Moreover, the platform aims to build features like video calls via AI.

US Envisions Fostering AI Technology for Next Generation

On 23 April, the US president, Donald Trump, issued the executive orders, highlighting the need for advanced technology to be integrated into school education to better prepare the next generation for the evolving technology. In a press release, the White House said

“By fostering AI competency, we will equip our students with the foundational knowledge and skills necessary to adapt to and thrive in an increasingly digital society…., preparing students to become active and responsible participants in the workforce of the future and nurturing the next generation of American AI innovators to propel our Nation to new heights of scientific and economic achievement.”

Although Duolingo is aiming high and embracing a forward-looking approach, the stakes are also high, and with them come greater risks. The CEO also acknowledged the fact that the technology is not 100% perfect and may cause occasional compromise on quality.
