Yes, the Stupid Patent of the Month award is an actual thing, albeit an obviously satirical one. The Electronic Frontier Foundation names the winner of the award every month for, as I’m sure you’ve guessed, having the stupidest patent that the organization saw that month. The award isn’t just meant to criticize companies for filing for stupid patents, but also the United States Patent and Trademark Office for granting them. In this instance, Microsoft was awarded a patent for the slide bar. That’s right, Microsoft seems to think it invented the slide bar that countless developers have used in their software to allow users to adjust settings, and it thinks that entitles it to the profits that a software company by the name of Corel has earned from some of its software.
