Currently, PlayStation Plus subscribers are indulging in a little nostalgic voyage with a small but significant gift, the SaGa Frontier Remastered. It is the 2021 remake of the legendary Square Enix’s 1997 PS1 RPG, which is available free of any cost on PS Plus Extra and Premium.
It is such a game that stays quietly in your library, while you keep telling yourself that you will play it after this one last modern blockbuster. However, that promise has to be fulfilled quickly, as the clock is ticking. The game was added to the service in February 2025 and is near its usual Square Enix exit window of 12 months, which they are known to have.
Square Enix and its Sudden Exit
Unlike some gamers who treat PlayStation Plus as a long-term lease, Square Enix definitely considers short stays to be their preferred option. Even though there is no official removal date yet, history suggests that SaGa Frontier Remastered could vanish from Extra and Premium as early as next month. Also, SaGa Frontier 2 Remastered will be absent from the sequel.
After the game vanishes from Extra and Premium, subscribers will once again face the game’s $24.99 price tag, which seems to be a lot all of a sudden when you remember it was free only yesterday.
A Cult Classic in 1997
During the PS1 era, SaGa Frontier was not the flashiest and not the most polished RPG. However, it was different. With eight protagonists having individual story lines, the game captivated players for multiple playthroughs long before it became a marketing buzzword.
While the critics were somewhat indifferent in 1997, the fans remained loyal and thus the game was granted the status of a cult classic. The updates of the game made the visuals smoother, added quality of life changes, and even the new playable character made the response higher than the original one.
This game, in the beginning, was released for PlayStation 1 only. However, it was upgraded afterwards to be played on Android, iOS, Nintendo Switch, Windows, and PlayStation 4. But Square Enix never made a version for PlayStation 5.
However, the PlayStation 4 edition can be played on both PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 5 Pro, through backward compatibility.
Bottom Line
How could one skip the SaGa Frontier Remastered if they are a fan of RPGs, branching stories, and late-nineties vibes? It is better to have it now than to regret it later. It is one of those games that, in a way, help you learn about it, require your patience, and most importantly it shows your acceptance of old-school design twists.
Also, in the unpredictable territory of subscription gaming, the golden rule is an obvious one that when a Square Enix RPG is free of cost today, it may not be so tomorrow.
