Passenger safety is a major concern for Uber ever, particularly in India where the company came under heavy fire after a passenger was raped by an Uber driver. While the company released a built-in panic button for its app, it’s taking things  a step further by partnering with an app called SafetiPin. The app helps gauge the relative safety of neighborhoods and Uber will be helping it do this by providing it with the information it collects.

Best in class safety is an on-going endeavour and we will work tirelessly towards that goal. Today we are announcing a new partnership that further cements our mission to creating a comprehensive safety ecosystem for riders in India. Piloting the collaboration in New Delhi, India, Uber is joining forces with SafetiPin, a map-based mobile safety app that tags safety scores to locations on a map in a city, based on safety audits done across the city. The initiative will be rolled out across other global markets in the coming months, including Bogotá, Colombia and Nairobi, Kenya with the aim to cover approximately 20,000 km of city roads and areas.
