The short answer is, “yes”.
The long answer is that Electronic Arts (EA) has been struggling to keep their empire in the world of gaming for some time. Their peak was arguably during the 6-year reign John Riccitiello as CEO, but that means that the decline started during his time at the top as well.
Last week, the company experienced a meltdown of epic proportions when their “always on” DRM made the launch of their new SimCity game a public relations and sales nightmare. The wildly popular game became the physical embodiment of everything that games hate when after its launch it basically didn’t work.
Gamers will be happy by the change and it appears that investors are happy as well with the stock shooting up 7% in after-hours trading since the move was announced.
It wasn’t just SimCity, but it’s pretty clear that the timing isn’t a coincidence. This was avoidable. Mistakes were clearly made and whether or not they were made at the top isn’t important. It was a disaster that happened on his watch and he has to take a good chunk of the blame. Instead of rejuvenating the brand with a safe title that should have been a home run, they barely took a swing at a hanging curve right over the plate.
EA’s forecasts may be weak but this swift moves gets them some level of credibility back from their fans and customers. They messed up and they’re going to fix it one way or another. They might not be able to fix it for those who purchased the game itself (even a week later it’s still having issues) but they are sending a very clear message that they are not happy about the failure and they’re going to do something about it.

Electronic Arts Announces Change in Executive Leadership
REDWOOD CITY, Calif.–(BUSINESS WIRE)– Electronic Arts Inc. (NASDAQ: EA) today announced that John Riccitiello will step down as Chief Executive Officer and as a member of the Board of Directors, effective March 30. The Board has appointed Larry Probst as Executive Chairman to ensure a smooth transition and to lead EA’s executive team while the Board conducts a search for a permanent CEO. The Board will consider internal and external candidates with the assistance of a leading executive search firm.
Mr. Probst has played a leadership role at EA since 1991. In addition to serving as Chairman of the Board since 1994, he previously served as the Company’s CEO from 1991 to 2007. As CEO, Probst successfully grew the Company’s annual revenues from $175 million to approximately $3 billion, led EA into new platforms such as mobile, online and other emerging markets and expanded its international presence to more than 75 countries.

EA expects that its revenues and earnings per share for the current quarter will be at the low end of, or slightly below previously issued guidance provided in its press release dated January 30, 2013.
