The Oculus Rift has managed to achieve over 100,000 developer kit sales, but not without some issues. The Facebook-owned company, Oculus VR, has been forced to suspend sales of the virtual reality headset to Chinese customers, with many orders to the country canceled under the suspicion that Oculus Rift headsets are being resold at a profit, instead of being used by developers as the company intended. Confirming the pulled sales on Reddit, Eurogamer reports, a company representative wrote “Our product in its current form, is a developer kit meant for developers that develop VR content.” “We need to make sure that we are doing what we can to make sure that resellers that are looking to flip our product for a profit are not taking stock away from legitimate developer purchases globally.”
Oculus has suspended sales of its Rift virtual reality headset in China because people are reselling it. Oculus recently began shipping the latest version of the development kit (DK2) to developers, including those in China. DK2 is an in-development version of the headset, and not intended for consumers. It’s designed for developers to mess about with and create content for. But after what it described as “extreme” reseller purchases, Oculus has now halted sales in China. “Yes, it is a bummer that we’ve had to suspend sales in China due to extreme reseller purchases,” an Oculus representative explained on Reddit (viaGamesInAsia). “We need to make sure that we are doing what we can to make sure that resellers that are looking to flip our product for a profit are not taking stock away from legitimate developer purchases globally. “Our product, in its current form, is a developer kit, meant for developers that develop VR content.” Oculus said it’s trying to work out an alternative way to ensure dev kits get into legitimate developer hands in China. “If you are an enthusiast, we kindly ask that you wait for the consumer Rift. It will be worth the wait.”
