Simultaneous TV and Internet Usage Increases, Proves A Point

TV Viewership

TV Viewership

Are you watching TV while surfing the net? Chances are pretty good that you have, and if so, you are not alone. A report by Nielson has revealed that many Americans are doing this at least once a month.

Or in other words: media is consuming our lives — that’s hardly a shocking revelation.

The report goes into detail with some interesting stats: there was a 35% increase in simultaneous television and Internet usage from the previous year (now spending around 3.5 hours with both on), mobile video usage grew by 57%, and total viewing of television content is around 35 hours per week. Also interesting is the fact that 35% of Americans now own DVRs.

Seems like things are going well for the television industry.

But did we mention that all these people that predict that television is going to die by posting online content are completely and utterly crazy? No? Well, they are.

At least Matt O’Grady, Nielsen Co media product leader, can correct his mistaken logic:

The initial fear was that Internet and mobile video and entertainment would slowly cannibalize traditional TV viewing, but the steady trend of increased TV viewership alongside expanded simultaneous usage argues something quite different.”

Quite different is an understatement.

This proves that people want to be immersed in their television programs as much as they can, and the Internet is the pathway to increasing that immersion and creating interest. We honestly don’t know how else you can drill it into these media companies’ heads.

Big media has plenty of growing up left to do.

  1. It’s typical to “fear” the unknown. I myself would never completely give up TV service. I do admit though that I watch less TV because I can get a lot of what I need from the internet like news and traffic reports. I’ve said it many times, people are not anywhere near ready to give up the couch and remote control. Couch-potato-ism is still alive and well.
