According to TechCrunch, Facebook has sent out invitations to a media event on November 15th, where Mark & Friends will reveal ‘Project Titan’ – what is expected to be a web-based email client, allowing users to register @facebook.com email addresses. Apparently, TechCrunch says that Project Titan is internally referred to as the ‘Gmail killer’.

And the plot thickens, and Facebook and Google continue to be grouchy at each other, and the world continues to turn.

Honestly, would you want an @facebook email account? Is that more, or less cheap-sounding than Hotmail?

  1. I’m not sure why anyone would want a facebook.com email address. Sure everyone is already on there already it seems, but would you really want to send out emails from that address to advertise that fact even more?

  2. Also interesting, it was announced today that Paul Buchheit (generally viewed as the creator of Gmail) is leaving his position at Facebook.

Personally, I’ve been looking forward to Project Titan for a while now, and am curious what sort of featureset it will roll out if the rumors are true about an imminent announcement.

One has to wonder what sort of bonanza this will be for selling ads on Facebook. While Gmail ads are (reportedly) based on the content of an e-mail, Facebook has all sorts of profile info to advertise against.

Even beyond that, Facebook aliases/usernames are pretty easy to come by. If the ability to send e-mails to Facebook inboxes from outside Facebook becomes a reality, spamming those addresses will be pretty easy, too.

Microsoft’s paying a kings ransom for a share of Facebook seemed to be getting them nothing in return at the time, and gave Facebook a lot with reported guaranteed delivery of Facebook status updates to Hotmail inboxes. Now Microsoft seems to be reaping the benefits of that investment.

  3. So, around the office today I didn’t find a single person who would be willing to switch their main email to facebook. This included both geeks and non-geeks alike.

  4. I guess ,it will liked by most of the facebook users. People these days are more connected through facebook than any other means. I have already seen writing informal(personal , not business) emails are done through facebook private messages. Hope this web mail will got the momentum very fast.

  5. I’m sure if they implement features, that interact with the user’s facebook, that can’t be done by other email providers, then a lot a facebook users will use this service…
