Wal-Mart and Best Buy have decided not to use Apple Pay

1 min read

During Apple’s presentation on Tuesday, the Cupertino company took the wraps off their new mobile payment services dubbed Apple Pay. They announced that they have many major retailers and restaurants who will be participating in the program, although oddly enough it seems that neither Walmart nor Best Buy were mentioned. Well it turns out that both retailers have announced that they will not be participating in the program, according to a report from The Wall Street Journal. Both retailers are said to be more interested in a different system called Merchant Customer Exchange. The reason behind this is because MCX’s service will only require users to download an app.

Apple Inc. has lined up an impressive list of banks and credit-card issuers to support its new mobile-payment service. Now all it needs is more merchants, and customers. Apple hopes its service, Apple Pay, will prompt shoppers to ditch their wallet and make purchases with an iPhone. The system relies on a technology known as near-field communication, or NFC, that has had trouble winning acceptance from merchants. Merchants must install a reader at their checkout line for so-called tap-and-go payments. NFC readers are being used by fewer than 10% of merchants, according to Gartner analyst Mark Hung. Starting in October, Apple said iPhone owners will be able to use Apple Pay at 220,000 U.S. locations, including McDonald’s Corp., Bloomingdale’s and Macy’s. By comparison, the Electronic Transactions Association said more than nine million U.S. merchants accept credit and debit cards. “Apple has rallied the issuing bank side, but not the merchant side,” said Richard Crone, chief executive of Crone Consulting, a payments advisory firm. “Many merchants who had NFC acceptance have turned it off.”

One Reply to “Wal-Mart and Best Buy have decided not to use…”

  1. The reason this is especially dumb and disingenuous by Walmart and Best Buy is they could do both no problem it’s all in software if they have the hardware for one they have the hardware for both.

My bad I was wrong. Best Buy and Walmart aren’t even going to be using NFC they are going to make you scan a QR code.
