Adobe announced on Thursday that it is incorporating artificial intelligence models from OpenAI and Alphabet’s Google into its Firefly app and making it available on mobile devices.
Adobe’s AI Model Development and Legal Assurance
Adobe, which owns widely used software like Photoshop and Premiere, has been developing its own AI models within Firefly since 2023. The company, located in San Jose, California, enables users to create images and video clips. Adobe assures its customers that they will not face any legal issues while using AI-generated content.
However, last year, Adobe made it clear that it was open to third-party AI models such as OpenAI to use its database and enhance Firefly’s capabilities.
Firefly’s New AI Model Integration
On Thursday, Adobe announced that the app will enable users to generate images using OpenAI’s GPT image generation, Google Imagen 3, Google Veo 2, and Flux 1.1 Pro, along with the latest version of Adobe’s proprietary Firefly model. The company also plans to introduce additional models from partners like Fal.ai, Luma, and Runway in the coming months.
Ely Greenfield, Adobe’s chief technology officer for digital media, told Reuters in an interview on Monday.
“We still have lots and lots of customers for whom taking stuff to production, they will only use Firefly because the commercial safety really matters to them,”
Greenfield added.
“But for other parts of the workflow, like ideation, they’re interested in experimenting with other models as well. So, we’re making that choice available to them,”
Simplified Workflow Across Adobe Apps
Firefly users will be able to generate content using third-party models and easily integrate it into other Adobe applications, such as Photoshop, with just a few clicks. Adobe plans to use its existing credit-based payment system for these third-party models, but it has not disclosed how the revenue will be shared between Adobe and the third-party providers.
