Canyon is back in the e-MTB business, offering discounts on its Spectral: ON and Torque: ON models at the same time launching an aluminum battery, which removes earlier fire risks.

Customers with 2024 recall alerts can now be confident using the terrain due to the fact that the German direct-to-consumer business focuses on both safety and affordability in a market that has been growing at a very fast rate.

Battery Nightmare Fixed Operations

A later disturbance hit late 2024 when Canyon halted the sale of the Spectral:ON CF, CFR and Torque:ON CF models after cases of plastic battery enclosure fractures, which caused potential water intrusion, short-circuit, and combustion.

In November 2024, Canyon issued a stop-use notice for the Spectral:ON CF & CFR, and the Torque:ON CF, over safety concerns associated with cracks appearing in the housing of some of the batteries.

An excerpt from their press release at the time reads as follows said:

We have been notified that a small number of batteries may be liable to damage the housing appearing as small cracks, gaps or similar. In rare circumstances, this could allow moisture inside the battery, potentially triggering a short-circuit that bypasses the fail-safe protection mechanisms. Whilst extremely unlikely, we cannot rule out that a damaged battery might catch on fire, resulting in a risk of personal injury or damage to property.

These malfunctions were the reasons to recall products in the world and even reimburse part of the money. The resulting redesign extended over one year to the first fully aluminum-encased 800 Wh unit produced by Darfon, and with double-sealed interfaces, as well as internal membranes, allows IP 57 waterproofing.

The SGS certification validates the resistance of the battery to changes of altitude, weather exposure, and crashes.

Power and Range Analyzed

These bicycles, with the EP801 motor the product of Shimano (providing 85 Nm of torque and a peak power of 600 W) assert 85 km range or a 1900m climb capability, which was confirmed by test, over 2000m high with a 100kg load.

The intelligent CAN bus technology allows charging to an 80 percent level within two hours and complete capacity in five hours.

Variants like the Spectral:ON CF 8 outperform competitors with a price difference of over EUR -1,000 at price levels of EUR -3,799- EUR –5,999, even when using carbon frames and high-end specifications.

In addition, during January, Canyon will release the following models:

Spectral:ON CFR: € 5,999 / – / £ 5,599

Torque:ON CF 7: € 3,999 / – / £ 3,749

Torque:ON CF 8: € 4,499 / $ 4,299 / £ 4,199

Torque:ON CF 9: € 4,999 / – / £4,649

Spectral:ON CF 7: € 3,999 / $ 3,899 / £ 3,749

Spectral:ON CF 8: € 4,499 / $ 4,499 / £ 4,199

Spectral:ON CF 9: € 4,999 / – / £ 4,649

Outlook Brightens

As forecasted, global e-MTB sales keep increasing through aggressive pricing strategies of Canyon, which has taken down prices against earlier recorded prices of EUR 9,499.

Canyon stands a chance to win a market share among competitors whose prices lie higher. The expected appreciations in the stock prices up to January will strengthen trail-dominating footholds as battery technology advances.
