Sony and Sucker Punch productions unveiled a 20 minutes long gameplay tape on last Thursday’s state of play presentation. The footage seemed to have achieved what it set out to, intriguing and anticipating its audience for this PlayStation5 exclusive. The brief event announced the release date of October 2, 2025 for Ghost of Yotei, along with revealing other thrilling and inspiring key details.
The female Protagonist
The story revolves around a female combatant, Atsu, in pursuit of vengeance against the Yōtei six, who had murdered her family. The typical retribution plot is set to unfold in the rugged landscape of mount Yōtei in Ezo (modern-day Hokkaido). This choice of a female protagonist is a strong and quite significant departure from the game’s previous male hero, Jin Sakai.
Cultural Authenticity
This call to feature a female protagonist was taken not for any surficial reasons but stemmed from one of Japanese’s deep rooted cultural folklore, Onryō. In Japanese folklore, Onryō are vindictive spirits traditionally depicted as women. Onryō tales are stories of exploring the theme of avengement through a female point of reference, drawing categorical differences from that of a male.
“Onryō are typically stories of vengeance from females, which is why Atsu was the perfect fit”
, explained the co-creative director, Jason Connell.
This sophisticated cultural base enables the story to explore the themes of resilience, transformation, and justice, while claiming a resonant historical authenticity in this loved or rather revered genre of Samurai.
Enhanced Gameplay and Mechanics
The state of play presentation also unveiled numerous gameplay innovations which expands upon the foundation of the franchise’ previous installment, Ghost of Tsushima. This version includes an interesting flashback feature, into the youth of Atsu, giving players a real-time connection with her emotional depth and character development, with a simple push button. Also, a novel clue system makes the exploration even more realistic and organic in contrast to the previously used, objective markers.
Ghost of Yotei houses an advanced range of modern arsenal such as swords, decals, armor sets, and charms with improved personalization. More interestingly, in this version, the combat has evolved with expanded personalization and dynamic enemy encounters, complimenting Atsu’s bulging reputation as the Onryō.
Companionship and Atmosphere
This vindictive journey also features a fearsome wolf companion, playing a critical role, helping both the narrative and gameplay. On one hand, this adds to the gameplay experience, on the other, it adds a layer to the emotional and humanistic touch by exploring the themes of loyalty, companionship, and survival.
Along with this added layer of companionship, the world of Atsu’s vindictive journey is displayed through stunning visuals as well. Snow-capped mountains, sweeping fields, and architectural accuracy immerse players in the world of the Edo period’s natural beauty. The game also provides a previously pulled back popular Kurosawa black-and-white filter, coupled with cinematic and music modes.
Technical Innovation
With so many fine-tuned details and sleek innovations, the game also offers technical improvement and gameplay experience. With its modified combat systems, lo-fi beats, and enhanced accessibility feature the game would be a refreshing experience.
The Ghost of Yōtei offers a brand new Samurai experience, redefining the themes of vindication and retribution in the Samurai universe.

Set to be released in October, Ghost of Yōtei, claims a dual position of technical progression and cultural milestone for the franchise. Reshaping the samurai epics through its female protagonist, it maintains the authentic storytelling and combat that made its predecessors a huge success in the first place.
The title will be available exclusively on PlayStation 5, with pre-orders anticipated to start soon after the state of play presentation.
