Mobile payment provider Square to begin accepting Bitcoin

44 sec read

In the sci-fi show Almost Human, everyone has a bitcoin wallet. More and more places to spend bitcoin means that could become a reality, and popular indie merchant mobile payment provider Square is the latest to accept the cryptocurrency. In an announcement on their blog, which isn’t an April Fool’s Joke pushed early Square assures us, the company notes that bitcoin can be used to buy goods and services with Square Market as of today.

If you’re lucky enough to have bitcoins burning a hole in your digital wallet, you can now spend them over on whatever you want (or can afford) at Square Market. And, no, it’s not a lame April Fool’s PR stunt. We promise. It’s true. We confirmed today that Square has indeed joined forces with Coinbase, a popular global Bitcoin wallet service, to allow merchants selling their wares through the mobile payment platform’s online store to easily, mostly painlessly accept the cryptocurrency as payment. And, of course, shoppers to pay with it. The pain is in the per-transaction price, but it’s not really that much of a raw deal. As Recode pointed out, Square Market merchants will have to eat a 2.75-percent fee for each Bitcoin transaction.
