Google has brought affordable virtual reality to more than five million people so far, the company announced through its official blog on Wednesday. High-end virtual reality headsets haven’t even hit the market yet, but even when they do, they’re going to cost several hundred bucks, which is far more than post people are willing to spend on something as new as virtual reality. That’s what makes Google Cardboard so awesome, because it allows people to use their smartphone to make their own basic virtual reality headset, or just buy a pre-built one for a few bucks. The fact that five million of the makeshift headsets have been shipped means that millions of people can now experience a basic form of virtual reality without having to spend tons of money.
