Hardly two days have passed since Spotify began allowing unlimited access to its free streaming service, but another major competitor has already stepped up to the plate with a major transition of its own. Rdio, one of the last bastions for premium desktop music services without ad-supported streaming, has finally gone free.
Following Spotify’s announcement of unlimited desktop streaming, Rdio announced Friday that it will now offer unlimited streaming through its website. The free Web-based service is ad-supported, which is a new move for the service. Rdio previously stuck to a subscription model of $9.99 per month for unlimited listening. Users could start off with a free trial, but once they hit a certain number of listening hours or had their account for six months, they had to pay up, make a new account, or go elsewhere.
