Threads are catching up to X in the social media game, and the statistics for June 2025 are a story of a changing power balance. Previously, X (formerly Twitter) has been the place to go for personal yet live conversations, as well as isolated news. Meta fast-tracked their competing in-house apps, Threads, and is already narrowing the gap, in particular, on mobile, where the attention wars are the most intense.

Threads reported having 115.1 million daily active users on its mobile application in June, representing an increase of almost 128% compared to the same period last year. However, X, conversely, had 132 million daily active users, and its progress is in the opposite direction, losing over 15% year-over-year. Such a phenomenal increase in Threads is a clear indicator of a shift in the way people like to socialise and share on the web.

A decentralised social site, Bluesky also achieved tremendous growth, with a 372% year-over-year increase. However, its user base of daily active users remains relatively low, with only around 4.1 million daily activities worldwide. The overall number of registered users on Bluesky is over 37 million people. However, the difference between signups and users who actively use the platform suggests that not all of them have become active users.

The zealous jump of Threads is not all about figures. It is an indication of the direction that Meta has taken towards mobile penetration. Threads entered as a mobile-first application, and this is a decision that generates revenue. The platform is becoming a competitor to X’s supremacy, especially among young users who want to use their phones as a primary social media platform. Meta is making a massive investment in mobile, and it’s paying off.

And the competition does not stop here. The web remains a rock of X. In June, X registered an average of 145.8 million daily web visits globally, whereas Thread had 6.9 million. Bluesky was not far behind Threads in this matter, with 5.3 million daily web visitors. This online strength currently places X at the top of the popularity list among users who tend to browse using desktops or laptops.

There are some peculiar differences in the US market. This is a fact because Bluesky had more visits to their web on an average day in June (2.4 million) than Threads (985,200). X led the pack by far, with 33.1 million daily web visits within the US However, on mobile, Threads is much closer to X, with its daily active users numbering 15.3 million, as opposed to 22.9 million X users.

The figures indicate that Threads poses a practical menace to X, at least in the mobile arena. Such a trend is capable of rendering Threads overtaking X in daily mobile users relatively soon. This would be an immense victory for Meta. Until today, ads are the only revenue-generating activity Meta has related to Threads, so increasing the number of mobile users is vital.

Conversely, Bluesky has a less specific future. Its technology has enabled the creation of a more open and user-configurable social network, which can serve as a distinctive feature that may appeal to those seeking something different on the major platforms. However, currently, the further development of Bluesky appears to be associated with the times of heated discussions or discontent with X. Unless Bluesky can provide more than an alternative to people, it will not be able to continue its expansion to new heights; Bluesky will have to create something where people will want to come every day instead of once a week or once a month as they do with current alternatives.

The current total of 350 million monthly active users, as reported by Meta, is the answer. X. However, last year Elon Musk said that X boasts 600 million monthly active users. It is a vast number, and the actual fight is taking place in everyday interactions, particularly on mobile devices. Further, Threads and X are likely to remain competitive in this race. The rapid development of Threads demonstrates that users are eager to adopt new services and are willing to try them when they offer something innovative and provide mobile-friendly access. The web supremacy of X gives it protection, but it can not afford to ignore the mobile transition. In the meantime, Bluesky must demonstrate that it can convert signups into daily usage and establish a self-sustaining community.
