A couple of days ago, the Google Photos team got a massive boost to its talent pool when Google acquired Fly Labs, a team of developers behind a few excellent video-editing apps on iOS, for an undisclosed amount. Google Photos already has some barebones video-editing features, but they’re nowhere near as high-quality or powerful as its photo-editing tools, which is something that the acquisition of Fly Labs is expected to fix.
Fly Labs, the development team behind a handful of powerful, yet easy to use, video editing apps on iOS has officially been acquired by Google. According to the announcement on Fly Labs’ website, the team will be joining up with the guys at Google Photos, folding their technology into Google’s and likely building one kick-ass video editor for Android. Currently, Google Photos has some very basic trim functionality for video, but nothing as robust as the apps Fly Labs created for the iPhone and iPad (see above video). Speaking of iOS, Fly Labs’ apps are now completely free with no in-app purchases. The apps will remain on the App Store for another 3 months and although no future app updates will be given, apps downloaded to your device will remain there. So, if you have an iPad laying around, or know someone who is using an iOS device, tell them to get on it. There’s no telling how long it’ll be before we see the fruits of Fly Labs’ labor manifest itself in Google Photos, but for anyone that’s wished Android had the video editing capabilities of iOS — there’s hope.
