Amazon is conducting an experiment in Germany that involves having couriers leave people’s packages inside the trunk of their cars. Starting in Munich with the potential to expand across the globe, Amazon is testing the effectiveness of a system where Prime customers tell Amazon the approximate location of their vehicle so that couriers can leave their packages inside their trunks.
From drones to lockers to one-hour deliveries by bike messenger, Amazon.com wants to make sure you get your packages. Now it is upping the ante with a creative new delivery method. The Seattle company said a small group of Prime customers in Munich will be eligible to receive packages in the trunk of their cars, even when they aren’t there. The test is in conjunction with car maker Audi and shipping company DHL. Under the test, Amazon customers with Internet-connected Audis agree to give DHL couriers electronic access to their trunks and then set the approximate location of their car and a window of time. The couriers then leave the package inside the trunks. Amazon said it hopes to roll the service out internationally after the experiment begins in Germany in May.
