The deal that was announced on July 11, 2025, is not a conventional buyout. Instead, Google is purchasing a non-exclusive license to some Windsurf technologies, and it has hired Mohan together with co-founder Douglas Chen and other senior research/development employees. Independently, Windsurf is not in the same group, and it is free to license its technology to others.
