Wordle is the daily five-letter word game from The New York Times. Everyone gets the same puzzle each day; you have six guesses. For live hints and the solution, open today’s Wordle page — this article covers rules, colors, and strategy.
What Is Wordle?
Wordle was created by Josh Wardle in 2021 and acquired by The New York Times in January 2022. A new word drops after midnight local time. The goal is to guess the word in as few tries as possible — many players track streaks and share emoji grids (no spoilers).
Rules
| Tile | Meaning |
|---|---|
| 🟩 Green | Correct letter, correct position |
| 🟨 Yellow | Letter is in the word, wrong position |
| ⬛ Gray / dark | Letter is not in the word |
Words must be real five-letter words from the game dictionary. Hard mode (optional in settings) forces you to reuse revealed green and yellow letters on subsequent guesses.
Best Starting Words
Strong openers hit common consonants and vowels: CRANE, SLATE, ADIEU, AUDIO, RAISE. There is no single “best” word — pick a starter you will actually use every day so your brain builds a habit.
Strategy Tips
- Use guess 1 to gather information; use guess 2+ to narrow positions.
- Do not reuse gray letters.
- Watch for duplicate letters (e.g., E appearing twice) — yellow/green counts can mislead until you test repeats.
- By guess 4, prioritize locking positions over discovering new letters.

How many guesses do I get in Wordle?
Six guesses per puzzle.
Can letters repeat in the answer?
Yes. The solution can include the same letter more than once (for example, two Es).

A new puzzle is available after midnight in your local timezone (NYT account may sync to US Eastern for some players — check in-game settings).
