The most successful email subject line for Obama’s campaign was “hey”
President Obama’s successful re-election campaign last year was marked by many technological victories. They won most of the many battles on social media, held the attention of the media in a way that almost had the unbiased fabric of journalism tearing away to root for him, and dominated the devices to score major victories through mobile device marketing. From a fund-raising perspective, one of the campaign’s most powerful weapons was good ol’ fashioned email marketing and their most powerful subject line may surprise many.
“Hey.”
That was it. The concepts of “I Need Your Support” or “Help Me on the Road to Victory” proved to be ineffective for the Romney campaign, while the Obama campaign kept it about as simple as possible. In fact, it’s hard to think of something simpler (with simpler being a 1- or 2-letter subject line) that could have been used in the subject line. Three letters is about as simple as it gets.
As it turns out, it was also exceptionally effective as can be seen from the current occupant of the White House.
This infographic below breaks down the successful use of email campaigning as a tremendous fund-raising tool. Some of the other interesting findings that led to $690 million in funds raised for the campaign include the use of mild curse words and the opinion that the uglier layouts seemed to work the best.
