BYOD: The truth about telecom expense management

BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) is quickly becoming the new norm in business. In fact, 75% of all businesses already allow their employees to connect their personal devices to their business network, and while this accounts for many happy workers, it can also make things complicated. The milestone of 15 billion network connected devices is creeping up in 2015; yes, that’s 15 billion. That many devices accounts for more than two per each person on the planet. And with those numbers, businesses should expect to see a service charge increase from their BYOD-ing.

Let’s look at the 15 billion/2 per person milestone on a smaller scale: a business. For the sake of the argument, let’s take a hypothetical business that has 1,000 employees. Now, let’s assume that every employee have 2 mobile, network connectable devices to their name, and they bring them to work. This business can expect to have 24,000 extra service charges to their yearly bill. Think about what this could mean for businesses with 2,000 or even 10,000 employees!

However, BYOD doesn’t just create service charges and make yuppies happy; there was also a much more sinister side: people who would take advantage of the work network. But that’s not much of a problem anymore and it’s not such a gamble to allow employees to connect to the business networks, as far as productivity goes. Slackers are easily weeded out through steps that match up non-work usage of devices, comparing bills to contracts, and matching plans to actual needs. These steps save the company valuable time, money, and resources, while still granting the hard working employees the network connection that they deserve.

Employees love the freedom that comes with BYOD. It adds something a little more personal to their work experience when they can connect their own personal devices to the work network. And surprisingly, 50% of IT Managers have seen an increase in employee productivity due to BYOD and companies who allow their employees to connect have, on average, a higher employee satisfaction rate. In fact, 40% of college students and 45% of current employees would accept a lower paying job in order to reap the benefits of BYOD. With that in mind, going BYOD just makes sense!
