Can the Galaxy S4 hit 100 million units sold?

Samsung Galaxy S4

Ten million down. Ninety million to go. That’s the news out of Samsung as their mobile chief announced today that they were nearing the 10 million unit mark in sales and believe that they may be on pace to break 9-digits with their current flagship before all is said and done.

“We are confident that we will pass more than 10 million sales of the S4 next week,” said co-CEO Shin Jong-kyun at a press event in Seoul yesterday. “It is selling much faster than the previous model S3.”

The device has been on sale for less than a month, launching in Korea on April 26th and expanding to much of the rest of the world the next day. This would be a huge win for the company if they can keep the momentum going because it would mean that they’re not just pulling in upgrading faithfuls of their other devices but are conquesting their nemesis, Apple. Around 60 million S3’s have been sold to date, so making up the gap would require iPhone defectors. That seems to be exactly what is happening, at least in the first month

Can they reach the 100 million mark? Will they be able to sustain the momentum through the next iPhone release?
