How Do You Destroy the Cellphone Industry? With a $1 iPhone App

45 sec read

In much the same way everyone love colonoscopies, we all love our cellphone carriers. With gouging, hidden fees, ridiculous charges for texting and more, companies like AT&T and Verizon inspire hate like few others.

But hope is on the way, and all it takes (for now) is an iPhone, a little Wi-Fi and a simple $1 app. Line2 is an communication app modeled after the iPhone’s own phone software that, as the name suggests, adds a second line with its own phone number to your Apple smartphone.

Well-suited to small businesses, the service by company Toktumi  also boasts features like Voicemail and call screening. What’s more, because it runs off of Wi-Fi, it also means that you’ll get excellent reception indoors rather than the dropped calls and sketchy connections many get with AT&T.

Now, before you get too excited: though it’s true that the app itself only costs a dollar, the service will run you $15/month after a a 30-day trial period. Still, for such a loaded feature set, that’s not a terrible price, and it will be interesting to see how the innovative application is received. Just as intriguing is how this app got through Apple’s notoriously random App Store approval process.
