Jim Carrey’s Twitter War Against His Own Film

Funny man and actor Jim Carrey is set to star as the Colonel Stars and Stripes in the highly anticipated Kick Ass 2.  But despite all the hype around the movie, Carrey took to Twitter to show his disdain of the violence shown in the film, and how feels he can no longer promote the blockbuster film.

On Sunday night Carrey tweeted an apology for those who were affected in the Sandy Hook school shooting this past December, and that he means no disrespect to those who are involved in the film.

He tweeted,” I did KickAss a month b4 Sandy Hook, and now in good conscience I can not support  that level of violence.”  He went on to say, “ I’m not ashamed of it but recent events have caused a change of heart”.

This latest news from Carrey has caused a little confusion for comic book writer and Kick Ass producer, Mark Millar. He uploaded a blog in his own words how he feels about Carrey’s recent outcry.

Millar openly supports the actor saying it is his decision and that he is stellar in the movie. But Millar goes on to be baffled by this turn of events and even defends the hot topic of movies impacting violence. He writes, “  I’m baffled by this sudden announcement as nothing seen in this picture wasn’t in the screenplay eighteen months ago. Yes, the body-count is very high, but a movie called Kick-Ass 2 really has to do what it says on the tin… this should have been no shock to a guy who enjoyed the first movie so much.”

He concluded by stating that, “ I’ve never quite bought the notion that violence in fiction leads to violence in real-life.”

This also isn’t the first time Carrey has used the power of the internet to get his opinions across. This past April, he starred in the largely controversial and popular Funny Or Die video ,Cold Dead Hands in which he portrays the well known Hollywood actor and Gun advocate.  Charton Heston in order to show his opinions on gun control. are. The video became one of the most viewed, shared, and commented videos on the site in just over a week. Leaving Carrey to be bashed on Fox news, and in return Carrey wrote a personal blog post on The Huffington Post defending himself.

This makes his current actions a little confusing for fans since he was publicly against the use of guns and violence well before he decided to make the film. It’s a little unclear what his motives are, if there are any, to speak up now just two months before the film’s release.

Either way Jim Carrey’s use of social media to express his thoughts is one of the smartest and quickest ways to get a message out. It definitely seems a trend amongst celebrities to go their Twitter accounts or personal blogs whenever they feel the need to address their fans. Back in December a bunch of high profile stars went to their Twitters to express their feelings on the school shooting or at any other time a major event happens in the news or in their lives. Whether it’s a birth announcements or call for political change, In the year 2013, social media is an outlet that allows the stars to express themselves directly to their fans and the media in their own words, For better or worse this can impact their reputations. Since Tweeting and Blogging is the new form of an official press release, maybe stars should start turning to social media agencies to help them.

Carrey plays the character Colonel Stars and Stripes, a born-again Christian who doesn’t swear, but  carries a baseball bat to beat his enemies and travels with his beloved dog. Ironically his character carries a gun around, but keeps it unloaded.

There has been no response as of yet from Jim Carrey. It’s now a concern that this negative association may lower ticket sales, but from the looks of the trend on Twitter, fans of  the movie aren’t really seeing the connection. Kick Ass 2 is set to be released August 16th.
