Samsung to jump into wearable tech segment with a watch of their own

Rumors have been spreading about the mythical iWatch from Apple. It will be worn on the risk and is supposed to have similar functionality to the iPhone.

Samsung is doing it, too. You’re probably thinking, “Of course they are.”

“We’ve been preparing the watch product for so long,” Lee Young Hee, executive vice president of Samsung’s mobile business, said during an interview in Seoul. “We are working very hard to get ready for it. We are preparing products for the future, and the watch is definitely one of them.”

The bitter rivalry for mobile domination in the gadget department has been one of the most contentious in recent years between tech companies. Apple sues Samsung, Samsung sues Apple, and both claim leadership in the smartphone arena. Expect it to get even hotter as Bloomberg is reporting that Samsung is following Apple once again.

Samsung’s disclosure comes after people familiar with Apple’s plans said last month the U.S. company has about 100 product designers working on a wristwatch-like device that may perform similar functions to the iPhone and iPad. The global watch industry will generate more than $60 billion in sales this year, and the first companies to sell devices that multitask could lock customers into their platform, boosting sales of phones, tablets and TVs.

Between Google Glass and the various other wearable tech gadgets hitting the market in the near future, we can expect that Skynet or the Borg will be taking over sometime soon.
