It seems that those of you who are looking forward to some gaming goodness with Super Smash Bros. for the Wii U will be pleased to hear that it is playable using Nintendo GameCube controllers. Talk about a throwback to the past, where the gap between the old and the new are bridged! This particular bit was shared by Nintendo over Twitter. Nintendo’s image, as you can see above, depicts the breakout box for the Wii U alongside a quartet of GameCube controller ports. The peripheral itself will hook up to the console via its front two USB ports.

Performance Digital Products announced earlier this month that it would launch a new controller inspired by the GameCube controller. Nintendo also revealed details about the Super Smash Bros. Invitational, a Wii U tournament to he held June 10 at the Nokia Theater in Los Angeles during E3 2014. Geoff Keighley will host.
