If you have any Imax home movies lying around the house that you were dying to put on YouTube one day, that day has come. YouTube now supports a video resolution (1096×3072, or 4096p) that was designed for a twenty-five foot screen. Make sure you are watching the above video in its original resolution to see every vein, wrinkle, and arm hair. The news was unveiled today at VidCon 2010 by Hunter Walk, YouTube’s Manager of Product Development in the keynote speech of the event.
YouTube’s blog illustrates the scope of the size well:
“To give some perspective on the size of 4K, the ideal screen size for a 4K video is 25 feet; IMAX movies are projected through two 2k resolution projectors.”
If you want more 4k goodness, check this playlist that compiles the few videos that exist in 4k resolution right now; expect that number to go up quite a bit in short order.
