We keep hearing about the rise of Chinese smartphone makers like Huawei and Xiaomi, but here in the United States it’s the South Korean companies that reign supreme. According the latest numbers from Kantar WorldPanel, LG and Samsung together account for around 78% of all Android devices sold in the United States, with LG showing some especially impressive growth in the country.

The latest numbers from Kantar WorldPanel show a strong rise in Android growth around the world, with LG making big strides in the US. Currently, Samsung and LG account for 78 percent of all Android sales in the US, which is huge. LG has doubled its share in the US market again, and was able to attract more first time smartphone buyers than Samsung. In China, Huawei took the top spot of smartphone vendors, as it held three of the top 10 most popular phones. “In urban China, Huawei took the top spot in the smartphone vendor ranking based on the success of its Honor lineup,” said Tamsin Timpson, strategic insight director at Kantar Worldpanel ComTech Asia. “The Honor 4X, Honor 6, and Honor 6 Plus all made it into the top 10 most popular smartphones. Both Huawei and Xiaomi have been able to expand their appeal to a wider range of consumers by extending themselves beyond their initial market positioning. Huawei now attracts a younger and more affluent base with its Honor brand, while Xiaomi also appeals to older users, who look for reliable, good-value-for-money offers.
