Wanna Buy MySpace…? Anybody? Please?

It’s fun to sometimes imagine MySpace still has a chance to be a relevant social network, but let’s face it: it’s not. It’s dead. Like, not dead dead, but saying otherwise would be like saying Yahoo matters in 2011. Or that Elvis is alive. That said, though, would you like to buy it? No, really. It’s up for grabs, and you can be a part of it, with the Let’s Buy MySpace initiative.

No surprises, here – Let’s Buy MySpace is an attempt to put the ailing social network back into the hands of its most passionate users. And they’d have to be passionate to donate their hard earned dollars (or in this case, pounds – it’s a British thing) to MySpace – but then again, perhaps that’s just what the network needs.

There’s no donation – at least not right away. Pledging to the campaign entitles one to a piece of the reclaimed MySpace, should it be successfully bought; and should enough pledges be made, those who manned up to buy MySpace back will be contacted to make a payment.

As of right now, the amount pledged is £3735, which, considering the campaign has only been active – with little press – for ten days, is quite impressive, if still millions of pounds off the mark to buy one of the biggest websites of yesteryear.

“It’s a long shot,” admits Adam Noakes, the man behind the campaign, to The Next Web. “But anything can happen and the response has been fantastic so far, My Football Club set the bar for crowdfunded projects and there is no reason why, if enough people get on board then we have a real chance.”

Respectfully, I’m gonna sit this one out. But should you fancy a piece of social networking ancient history, give Noakes a shout!
