Asus To Compete Against Apple iPad with Tablets of Their Own

Asus isn’t planning on settling for Apple to take over the tablet market without a fight — the PC maker believes that they can compete by differentiating themselves from the competition.

Asus is planning on creating at least two tablet devices, and considering Google’s Chrome OS and Android platforms and Microsoft’s Windows 7 platform to run on them. The company stated that they prefer open software solutions instead of closed systems like Apple’s.

The focus will be enabling great multimedia experiences for consumers on these tablets, as it is one of the most appealing reasons for owning a device like this in the first place.

Interestingly, Asus CEO Jonney Shih believes didn’t really seem too confident about the tablet market: “Between netbooks and smartphones and e-readers, we think there will be a space for something like a tablet or slate PC.”

Asus is well known for their netbook and notebook computers, but not so much for slates. That said, it will be interesting to see what approach they take to make some noise in the slate market, but it wouldn’t surprise us if there were some bumps in the road along the way.
