Star Wars: Rogue One will take place between the two trilogies

Star Wars: Rogue One will be the first of the standalone Star Wars movies that are released under Disney but we know even less about this film than we do about Episode VII. At least, we used to know less, but thanks to Gareth Edwards we now have a full synopsis. Edwards, who’s directing the film, has revealed the premise of the story as well as the fact that it takes place between the two trilogies.

Today at Star Wars Celebration, Producer Kathleen Kennedy, Lucasfilm’s vice president of development Kiri Hart, and director Gareth Edwards took to the celebration stage to discuss new details on the film, and debuted the official synopsis for Edward’s upcoming anthology film Star Wars: Rogue One. The film stars Felicity Jones as a rebel soldier and will take place between episodes III and IV, though Edwards noted it leans “maybe a little bit towards IV”. The film will follow a rogue band of resistance fighters who unite to steal the Death Star plans and bring new hope to the galaxy. Star Wars: Rogue One takes place in a time when the Jedi are all but extinct and the absence of the Jedi is palpable. It comes down to a group of heroes without magical powers to save the galaxy. Rogue One is set to hit theaters in December 2016.
