New Facebook Feature of Monetizing Stories Lets Creators Earn Money from Story Views

Social media is quickly becoming the marketplace where creativity directly translates into currency. As Facebook’s monetization rolls out, with views on public stories, content creators stand to cash in on yet another way of profiting from their everyday stories. It could even be a quick life update, a tease for a new video, or a scene view, which could translate into payments. In its race to conquer the creator economy, this new feature could change the whole game for influencers and average users on Facebook. The feature is part of a global rollout and will be available to everyone enrolling in the Facebook Content Monetization Program. It is the means through which content creators can now earn from the very stories they were already telling on Facebook.

New Revenue Stream for Creators

Through this expansion of monetization opportunities, creators can now make money by posting stories about their everyday lives or clips of their other content, such as recipe videos and reels. There are no minimum view thresholds to qualify for earning money, as is the case with some other monetization options. As a spokesperson in an email told TechCrunch,

This initiative feeds into Facebook’s larger framework for driving monetization for content creators and stimulating platform engagement. The monetization given to stories marks Facebook’s next push to be a serious alternative in the competitive ring with other social media platforms, most notably TikTok, where generous cash bonuses and content deals attract targeted creators.

Seamless Monetization

Eligible creators who are already part of Facebook’s Content Monetization Program and have activated monetization on their profiles do not have to take any other steps for activating story monetization. It is integrated into the existing structure of the performance-based payout model of monetization in-line ads, Ads on Reels, and Performance Bonuses.

Facebook initially tested Stories monetization on a limited number of beta users before rolling it out to the broader audience, as in 2024, billions of invitees were attracted from testing to join the program. Creators who are not part of the Program yet can visit the program’s website and fill up the Facebook Content Monetization beta interest form.

Content Creation on Facebook

As Facebook is busy creating and retaining creators through monetary means, the platform stated that across the board creators have earned above $2 billion in 2024 alone, while payouts for Reels and other short videos surged by more than 80%. The social media outlet announced its monetization options in 2017 and thus far have paid earnings to more than 4 million creators around the globe. It clearly shows that the competition in the field of content creators has become more intense than ever since Facebook took a step towards monetizing stories. In this case, offering new revenue streams as an important incentive for staying at Meta is a bold play against its rivals, like TikTok and YouTube.

At the same time, a question arises from this opportunity: Is monetization going to lead creators to a more commercialized direction of writing stories that may strip their authenticity? With an expansion of monetization tools, Facebook continues to prove its commitment to its digital creators while remaining in touch with shifting trends in social media content consumption.
